  • IN EARLY 1991, ONE LARGE HOLDING GROUP WAS CREATED KNOWN AS SIDEROM. IT HAS BEEN MODELLED AFTER THE FRENCH EXAMPLE OF A UNIFIED NATIONALIZED STEEL INDUSTRY, A KIND OF LARGE HOLDING WITH MORE OR LESS DEPENDENT BRANCH ACTIVITIES.

Comments on the production information

  • IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT GALATI HAS NOT ACHIEVED THE PLANNED PRODUCTION STRUCTURE. THE ONLY PRODUCTION FIGURES AVAILABLE AS OF 1991 WAS THE CAPACITES OF THE PLANT. THE PLANT IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING APPROXIMATELY 6,000 KT OF RAW STEEL AND 4,000 KT OF ROLLED STEEL.
  • THE PREDOMINANT PRODUCTS AT GALATI STELL AS OF 1991 WERE FLAT PRODUCTS, COATED PLATE, HEAVY SECTIONS, BLOOMS, AND SLABS.

Comments on other economic factors

  • FOREIGN INTEREST IN ROMANIAN STEEL PLANTS HAS BEEN QUITE DULL, EXCEPT FOR THE "JEWEL" OF THE INDUSTRY, GALATI STEEL COMBINATE. IT IS THE LARGEST INTEGRATED STEEL PLANT IN EASTERN EUROPE.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit THE THREE CORNERSTONES OF THE INDUSTRY WILL EVENTUALLY BE GALATI, CALARASI, AND HUNEDORA STEELWORKS. GALATI WILL BE THE MAJOR FLAT ROLLED PRODUCER. IT WILL ALSO BE IN CHARGE OF SUPPLYING THE REST OF THE INDUSTRY WITH SEMI-PRODUCTS. THERE WAS VERY LITTLE INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF THIS MAS DATABASE REVIEW.
