Deposit THERE ARE REPORTEDLY 5 PEGMATITES IN THIS AREA. THE OLD GEM (MAIN PEGMATITE)CONSISTS OF TWO SHALLOW OPEN CUTS 100 TO 150 LONG AND 25 TO 125 FEET WIDE. THIS NORTHWEST TRENDING PEGMAT TAINING THE GEM MINE IS IRREGULAR. THE GEM MINES ARE IN COMP MATITES WHICH SHOW BANDING OF MINERALOGIC TYPES. PLAGIOCLASE COVITE PEGMATITE 5-10 FT THICK FORMS A SHELL AROUND ALBITE P TITE WHICH GRADES INTO MICROCLINE SPODUMENE AND AMBLYGONITE TITE. TANTALITE AND CASSITERITE OCCUR WITH THE ALBITE AND SP PEGMATITE AND ARE DISSEMINATED THROUGHOUT THE ROCK. THE MINE IGINALLY OPENED FOR GEM TOURMALINE IN 1903, BETWEEN 1926-27 FOR POLLUCITE. THIS MINE WAS ALSO THE SOURCE OF A LARGE TONNAGE HIGH GRADE FELDSPAR AND SPODUMENE. THE FELDSPAR IS CLEAVLAND THE PEGMATITE IN THE GEM QUARRY IS IRREGULAR ,CONCENTRIC IN AND IT PINCHES OUT GRADUALLY TO THE SOUTH AND ABRUPTLY TO TH THE UNITED FELDSPAR CO OPERATED THREE QUARRIES NORTHEAST OF GEM QUARRY. ANOTHER PEGMATITE HAS BEEN QUARRIED ABOUT 250 FT WEST OF THE HILLTOP. THIS PEGMATITE, 25 FT WIDE STRIKES N 25 DIPS 50 NE. IT LENSES OUT AT THE SOUTHEAST END OF THE PIT BU OUT FOR AT LEAST 200 FT TO THE NW. CLEAVLANDITE-CASSITERITE ITE PEGMATITE FORMS A 6 FT LAYER ALONG THE FOOTWALL. RESERVES (FROM WAR MINERALS REPORT ER 91.1722) A TONS OF AMBLYGONITE AND SPODUMENE COULD BE HANDCOBBED FROM T GEM QUARRY AND UNITED FELDSPAR CO (1942) SMALLEST QUARRY. CO TANTALITE AND CASSITERITE PROBABLY MAKE UP ABOUT 4-5 LBS PER ROCK IN THE TWO GEM QUARRIES.ABOUT 5000 TONS OF ROCK WOULD B PECTED IN THE SMALLER ONE, 7500 IN THE LARGER OR ABOUT 25 TO COMBINED TANTALUM AND TIN MINERALS- FROM WMR REC 703. ONLY T REPORTED ON MATRIX 6. REC/080 COLS 53-75 DIMENSIONS ARE FOR THE MAIN PEGMATITE. DATE OF COMMENTS 1975.
