Comments on the production information

  • THE CONCENTRATOR WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1948. THE GRINDING CIRCUIT WAS EXTENDED IN 1975 AND A MODERNISATION PROGRAM COMMENCED IN 1986 WHICH IS STILL UNDERWAY. ORE BENEFICIATION IS THROUGH FOUR STAGES OF CRUSHING. THE CRUSHED ORE IS WASHED TO REMOVE ICE AND CLAYEY WASTE MATERIAL. THE CONCENTRATES ARE THICKENED AND FILTERED TO A MOISTURE CONTENT OF ABOUT 15 PERCENT. TAILINGS ARE PUMPED TO A DAM 12 KILOMETERS FROM THE CONCENTRATOR SITE. THE COPPER CONCENTRATE CONTAINS 1 TO 2 PERCENT NICKEL; 36 TO 40 PERCENT IRON; 34 PERCENT SULFUR; .25 PERCENT MGO; 0.2 PERCENT CAO; 1 PERCENT SIO2; AND 0.3 PERCENT AL2O3. THE MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM FOR THE NORILSK CONCENTRATOR IS THE PREVENTION OF WATER SEEPAGE FROM THE TAILINGS DAM. IN 1990, THE COST OF MILLING ONE METRIC TON OF DISSEMINATED ORE WAS R5.00 AND THE COST OF MILLING ONE METRIC TON OF MASSIVE SULPHIDE ORE WAS R14.90. ABOUT TWICE AS MUCH ENERGY IS USED IN CRUSHING AND GRINDING THE MASSIVE ORES. THE MEKHANOBR INSTITUTE HAS BEEN COMMISSIONED TO UNDERTAKE A R140 MILLION MODERNISATION PROGRAM AT NORILSK.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • ADIT CAP IS A MADE UP #, TO ARRIVE AT AN APPROX CCPUTS # FOR THREE COMMODITIES; COPPER, NICKEL; COBALT: THE CCPUTS FOR CU IS THE CU CONTENT IN THE CONCENTRATE: THE CCPUTS FOR NICKEL IS THE CONTAINED NI IN THE ORE; AND FOR COBALT IS THE TOTAL CAP.

Comments on other economic factors

  • IN 1990, ORE WAS SUPPLIED AS FOLLOWS: THE NORILSK I MINE SUPPLIES DISSEMINATED COPPER-NICKEL ORE; THE FOUR MINES IN THE TALNAKH AREA SUPPLY DISSEMINATED AND COPPER-RICH ORE; AND THE OKTYABR MINE, WHICH IS ONE OF THE FOUR IN THE TALNAKH AREA, SUPPLIES MASSIVE SULPHIDE ORE. ALL OF THE COPPER CONCENTRATE IS SENT TO THE NORILSK SMELTER.
