Comments on the production information

  • BAUXITE PRODUCTION IN 1991 WAS 2.01 MILLION TPY. BAUXITE PRODUCTION IN 1992 WAS 1.72 MILLION TPY. BAUXITE PRODUCTION IN 1993 WAS 1.56 MILLION TPY.
  • THE FENYOFO MINE EXPLOITS ITS LENTICULAR OREBODIES BY UNDERGROUND MINING WITH PRODUCTION AT ABOUT 450,000 TPY. THE BAKONYOSZLOP MINE WILL BE DEVELOPED TO REPLACE THE NYIRAD MINE. IT CONTAINS SEVERAL LENTICULAR OREBODIES WHICH WILL BE WORKED BY OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND METHODS. PUMP STATIONS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY USED TO SOLVE THE FLOODING PROBLEMS IN THE NYIRAD AREA. THE PUMPED WATER IS THEN USED FOR DOMESTIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES. EVEN THOUGH EXTENSIVE PUMPING HAS BEEN EXECUTED TO LOWER THE WATER TABLE BELOW THE BAUXITE ORE OF THE NYIRAD MINES AND SIMULTANEOUSLY SUPPLY THE SURROUNDING DOMESTIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND INDUSTIAL NEEDS, THIS PUMPING OF THE GROUNDWATER OVER THE YEARS HAS UPSET THE NATURAL EQUILIBRIUM OF THE WATER TABLE. IN AN EFFORT TO PRESERVE THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT, THE RATE OF WATER PUMPING HAS BEEN REDUCED TO THE EXTENT THAT THE NYIRAD BAUXITE MINES HAVE BEEN REFLOODED. THIS IS THE REASON WHY THE NYIRAD MINES WERE EXPECTED TO CEASE PRODUCTION IN 1990. THE CLOSURE OF THE NYIRAD BAUXITE MINES IS ESTIMATED TO RESULT IN THE LOSS OF TWO MILLION TONS OF HIGH QUALITY BAUXITE.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THE DATA FOR THIS MINE, BAKONY BAUXITE MINES, ALSO INCLUDES: THE NYIRAD, HALIMBA III, IHARKUT, BITO II, FENYOFO I, AND THE BAKINYOSZLOP MINES. THE SEQUENCE NUMBERS FOR EACH OF THE MINES ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE NYIRAD DISTRICT MINE, 4370850001; NYIRAD I, 4370900002; HALIMBA MINE, 4370900001; HALIMBA DISTRICT, 4370900019; AND THE FENYOFO MINE, 4370900013. IN 1975, MINING FROM THE HALIMBA MINE WAS BELOW THE WATER TABLE AT 40 TO 50 METERS. DEPOSITS CONSIST OF HUNDREDS OF LENSES WITH EACH CONTAINING 10,000 TO ONE MILLION TONS. A PRODUCTION RATE OF 450,000 TONS PER YEAR OR 1,800 TONS PER DAY HAS BEEN REPORTED AT THE HALIMBA III MINE AND PLANS ARE UNDERWAY TO INCREASE PRODUCTION TO 600,000 TONS PER YEAR. BAUXITE FROM THE HALIMBA MINE GOES TO THE AJKA PROCESSING PLANT IN TWELVE-TON TRUCKS WITH SIX TON TRAILERS THE ALUMINA IS THEN SENT TO EITHER SMELTERS IN HUNGARY OR EXPORTED. REPORTED RESERVES AS OF 1994 ARE SUFFICIENT TO LAST 30 YRS AT CURRENT RATES OF PRODUCTION. ABOUT 80% OF PRODUCTION FROM UNDERGROUND MINES USING MODERN TECHNOLOGY. FOUR UG MINES AND ONE OPEN PIT ARE INCLUDED IN THIS GROUP. A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE RESOURCES OCCURS BELOW THE WATER TABLE. BECAUSE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH PUMPING, THE COMPANY IS REDUCING THE AMT OF MINING BELOW THE WATER TABLE.
  • ALUMINUM GRADE AS REPORTED BY CRU RANGED FROM 50.06% TO 50.84% AND IS A HEAD GRADE (PROBABLY INCLUDING DILUTION).

Comments on the workings information

  • MOBILE EQUIPMENT INCLUDES ATLAS COPCO CAVO 310 LOADERS, GHH LHD MACHINES AND ATLAS COPCO CAVO DRILLING RIGS IN THE UNDERGROUND MINES. THE TOTAL LABOR FORCE FOR THE YEAR OF 1990 FOR THE BAKONY BAUXITE MINES, INCLUDING THE NYIRAD, HALIMBA III, IHARKUT, BITO II, FENYOFO I, AND BAKINYOSZLOP MINES, WAS 3,200 PERSONNEL.

Comments on other economic factors

  • EXPORTS OF BAUXITE TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA, EAST GERMANY, AND POLAND HAVE DECLINED FROM 542000 TONS IN 1980 TO 379000 TONS IN 1988. THE REMAINDER OF THE PRODUCTION IS DELIVERED TO THE AJKA, ALMASFUZITO, AND MASONMAGYAROVAR CHEMICAL GRADE, ALUMINA PLANTS OF HUNGALU. THE TOTAL RESERVES FOR THE BAKONY BAUXITE MINES, INCLUDING THE NYIRAD, HALIMBA III, IHARKUT, BITO II, FENYOFO I, AND BAKINYOSZLOP MINES ARE ESTIMATED AT 167,000,000 TONS.
