Deposit 1978 - OPERATIONS EMPLOY 700 PERSONS. MAGNETITE IS RECOVERED FROM BEACH IRON SAND THROUGH PLACER DREDGING. HAULAGE TO THE CONCENTRATOR IS BY TRUCK. FEED CAPACITY OF THE MILL IS 8300 METRIC TONS/DAY. MAGNETIC SEPARATION IS USED TO EXTRACT THE MAGNETITE. THE PRESENT PLACER OPERA- TION PRODUCES 2500 METRIC TONS/DAY ORE AND HAS BEEN OPERATING SINCE 1964. A NEW UNDERGROUND MINE AND MILL ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. TO VIGAN. 1976 - THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IS 609. MINING IS BOTH OPEN PIT AND ALLUVIAL. THE CRUDE IRON ORE MINED AND CAPACITY IS 12,000 TONS/DAY. METALS AND CONCENTRATES PRODUCED ARE EQUIVALENT TO 1,800 TONS/DAY OF IRON. ALLUVIAL MINING IS PERFORMED BY ONSHORE DREDGING AND SLUICING. THE TYPE OF CONCENTRATOR PROCCESSING IS MAGNETIC EXTRACTION. 1978 - PLACER MINING STARTED IN 1964. DAILY ORE CAPACITY IS 2500 METRIC TONS AT 58-60% IRON. THE CONCENTRATOR FEED CAPACITY IS 8300 TONS/DAY AND EXTRACTION IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH MAGNETIC SEPARATION. AN UNDERGROUND MINE AND MILL ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. 1973 - PHILIPPINE IRON MINES REPLACED FILMAG AS TOP PRODUCER OF IRON ORE. FILMAG EXPORTED 607,000 TONS IN 1970 AND 700,000 TONS IN 1971 AND 1972 OF IRON ORE. THE IRON ORE OCCURS IN BEACH SAND DEPOSITS. FILMAG IS IN LA UNION PROVINCE. 1968 - FILMAG (PHILIPPINE MAGNETITE INC.) NOW RANKS SECOND AMONG PHILIPPINE IRON ORE PRODUCERS. NEW CLAIMS STAKED INCLUDE THREE IN ARINGAY AND TWO IN BACNOTAN, MAKING A TOTAL OF 94 ACTIVE CLAIMS FOR THE CORPORATION. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BY THE COMPANY HAS RESULTED IN MANY OPER- ATION IMPROVEMENTS.
