Deposit THE ORE OCCURS IN THE PRECAMBRIAN IRON-FORMATION, THE CAUE ITABIRITE. IT FORMED BY REPLACEMENT BY HEMATITE DURING METAMORPHISM AND FOLDING. THE MUTUCA MINE HAS BEEN IN OPERATION FOR ABOUT TWENTY YEARS, PRODUCING HIGH GRADE IRON ORES FOR THE STEELMAKING INDUSTRY. ALTHOUGH MOST OF ITS LUMPY ORE WAS USED UP TO THE RECENT PAST IN BLAST FURNACES, PRACTICALLY ALL OF THE PRESENT PRODUCTION IS BEING DELIVERED WORLDWIDE FOR THE MAKING OF SPONGE IRON BY DIRECT REDUCTION PLANTS. THE ORE IS TRANSPORTED BY TRUCK 11 MILES TO A RAIL FACILITY WHICH TRANSPORTS THE ORE TO THE PORT OF RIO FOR EXPORT. SOME ORE IS SHIPPED DIRECTLY BY RAIL TO THE COSIPA STEEL WORKS IN SAO PAULO. AN ESTIMATED 50-60% OF THE IRON ORE IS USED DOMESTICALLY BY THE COSIPA STEEL WORKS.
