Comments on the production information

  • TWO CIRCUITS ARE IN OPERATION. THE FIRST WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1968 AND THE SECOND IN 1974. THE PLANT WAS MODERNISED IN 1978. THE TWO MAIN ORE TYPES, CORRESPONDING TO THE TWO MAJOR ORE SOURCES, ARE TREATED SEPARATELY. THREE STAGE CRUSHING IS FOLLOWED BY TWO STAGE GRINDING. THE BULK CONCENTRATE IS REGROUND AND FED TO THE COPPER ROUGHERS. THE COPPER CONCENTRATE IS FURTHER REGROUND BEFORE SCAVENGING AND CLEANING. ZINC AND PYRITE CONCENTRATES ARE PRODUCED FROM THE COPPER TAILS BY DIFFERENTIAL FLOTATION. ALL CONCENTRATES ARE THICKENED, FILTERED, AND DRIED. TAILINGS ARE PUMPED TO A DAM WHICH IS 3 KILOMETERS FROM THE CONCENTRATOR. NO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS ARE REPORTED. IN 1990, THE COST OF MILLING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE WAS R7.20. THERE ARE PLANS FOR FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE CONCENTRATOR. THE UCHALI AND MOLODYOZHNI OPEN PIT MINES ARE APPROACHING THE END OF THEIR LIVES AND WILL BE REPLACED BY THE UCHALI AND UZELGINSKI UNDERGROUND MINES WHICH ARE NOW BEING DEVELOPED. THE CONCENTRATOR, WHICH CANNOT BE FULLY SUPPLIED BY THE TWO LOCAL MINES NOW, WILL HAVE TO BE EXPANDED TO TREAT THE FULL OUTPUT OF THE TWO NEW MINES. IN ADDITION TO THE DEEPER SECTION OF THE UCHALI UNDERGROUND MINE. THE COMPLEX IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE A LONG LIFE AHEAD OF IT. THE UCHALINSKY PLANT HAS A PLANNED CAPACITY TO PRODUCE ABOUT 5 MILLION METRIC TONS OF ORE A YEAR.
