Deposit THE BISGOD AREA IS CONSIDERED TO BE SOMEWHAT TYPICAL OF THE KARNTAKA REGION, THAT ONTAINS MANY SCATTERED DEPOSITS. THE REGION HAS BEEN A MAJOR PRODUCER IN QUANTITY, BUT THE QUALITY IS LOW; NEARLY ALL OF ITS USE IS RESTRICTED TO ADDITIONS TO BLAST FURNACES. SINCE THIS USE IS DECLINING RAPIDLY (AND BECAUSE OF ADVONCED STEELMAKING TECHNOLOGY, WILL PROBABLY BECOME NON-EXISTANT), THE KARNATAKA REGON PRODUCTION WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BECOME INSIGNIFICANT. REGIONAL RESERVES HAVE BEEN STATED AS 15 MT (NMAB), HOWEVERTHIS IS PROBABLY BASED ON REGIONAL GEOLOGIS INFERENCE MINING AND CONCENTRATION IS BY HAND METHODS (ABOUT 600 PERSONNEL ARE EMPLOYED). THE CONCENTRATES ARE HAULED BY 6-13 T TRUCKS TO BELEKERI (140 KM); THE TRUCKS BACK ONTO THE DOCK AND DUMP DIRECTLY INTO BARGES WHICH TRANSLOAD TO SHIPS.
