Comments on the production information

  • THE PLANT WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1940 AND LAST MODERNISED IN 1963. CONCENTRATES ARE ROASTED IN FLUIDISED BED ROASTERS WHICH HANDLE ABOUT 900 METRIC TONS PER DAY OF CONCENTRATE, WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO 40,000 TO 50,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR OF BLISTER. THE REVERB SLAG IS DISCARDED WITHOUT ADDITIONAL TREATMENT. THE EXHAUST GAS IS CLEANED THROUGH CYCLONES AND ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATORS PRIOR TO THE STACK. THE BLISTER IS CAST INTO CAKES AND ALL TRANSPORTED FOR REFINING TO THE URALELECTROCOPPER REFINERY AT PYSHMA. TOTAL CONSUMPTION OF ELECTRICITY IN THE SMELTER IS 735 KILOWATT-HOURS PER METRIC TON OF BLISTER. THE REVERBERATORY FURNACE CONSUMES 802 CUBIC METERS OF GAS PER METRIC TON OF BLISTER COPPER. FURNACE DUSTS ARE RECYCLED. ALL BY-PRODUCTS EXCEPT SULPHUR, REPORT TO THE BLISTER FOR RECOVERY AT THE REFINERY. ROASTER AND CONVERTER GASES ARE PASSED THROUGH ACID PLANTS FOR CONVERSION TO 92.5 TO 94 PERCENT GRADE ACID. COSTS ARE REPORTED TO BE R213 PER METRIC TON OF CONCENTRATE SMELTED. THIS IS BROKEN DOWN INTO LABOR, 1.5 PERCENT; ENERGY, 4.45 PERCENT; AND "OTHERS", INCLUDING FEED COSTS, 94.05 PERCENT. MAJOR PROBLEMS CONCERN DUST AND SULPHUR DIOXIDE COLLECTION. NO EXPANSIONS ARE PLANNED, BUT IT IS INTENDED TO START TRIALS ON A PILOT SCALE VANYUKOV FURNACE IN 1991. THERE IS A NON-FERROUS METALS FABRICATING PLANT ON THE SITE. THE SREDNEURALSK COPPER SMELTING OPERATION, IN THE TOWN OF REVDA IS ONLY RUNNING AT 70 PERCENT OF ITS 130,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR CAPACITY, PRODUCING BLISTER COPPER GRADING 95 TO 96 PERCENT FOR TWO REASONS. THE FIRST REASON STEMS FROM ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS, SINCE SREDNEURALSK IS A HEAVY POLLUTER, IT HAS COME UNDER FIERCE CRITICISM FROM LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS. THE SECOND REASON IS THE PROBLEMS IN SOURCING RAW MATERIALS OF GOOD QUALITY. SREDNEURALSK USED TO SOURCE CONCENTRATES FROM THE URALS, MONGOLIA, ARMENIA, AND GEORGIA, BUT WAR AND THE BREAKDOWN IN ECONOMIC TIES WITHIN THE CIS FORCED THE PLANT INTO THE MORE LUCRATIVE BUSINESS OF TOLL SMELTING.
