Comments on other economic factors

  • SMALL AMOUNTS OF GAS AT HIGH PRESSURES (AVERAGING ABOUT 80% NITROGEN AND 20% METHANE AND HIGHER HYDROCARBONS) EXIST IN TINY INCLUSIONS IN THE SYLVANITE. THIS IS PREVALENT IN AREAS OF GREATER SHALE CONTENT WHERE MORE GAS HAS BEEN ABSORBED ONTO OR IS CONTAINED WITHIN CLAY MINERALS. WHEN SUCH ZONES ARE REACHED, GAS RELEASE IS OFTEN EXPLOSIVELY RAPID, EJECTING LARGE TONNAGES OF ROCK INTO THE WORK AREA. THUS CUTTING WITH CONTINUOUS MINERS IN SUCH AREAS HAS PROVEN INFEASIBLE. VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS ARE SEVERE DUE TO HIGH VIRGIN ROCK TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 40 DEGREES C. MINE WASTE ROCK (TAILLINGS) ARE BUMPED INTO THE OCEAN.
