Comments on the ownership information

  • FLETCHER CHALLENGE LTD. OWNS THE MINERAL RIGHTS ONLY AND IN 1989, FLETCHER CHALLENGE SOLD ILMENITE RESERVES AND PILOT PLANT TO NORTH BROKEN HILL.

Comments on the production information

  • IN ADDITION TO ILMENITE (THE MAJOR ORE COMPONENT), THE SOUTH ISLAND SANDS CONTAIN VERY SIGNIFICANT CONCENTRATIONSD OF GOLD WHICH COULD GREATLY ADD TO THE VALUE OF THE CONCEN- TRATES RECOVERED. HOWEVER, THE GOLD OCCURS IN SUCH SMALL AMOUNTS (0.002 OZ/TON OF SAND) THAT A GREAT OUTPUT IS NOT EXPECTED. THE GOLD IS SOLD AS BULLION CUBES. 1989 INFORMATION PUTS EXPECTED PRODUCTION OF ILMENITE AT 350000 TPA WITH 25000 TPA OF ACCESSORY MINERALS.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • INCLUDES SYNTHETIC RUTILE PLANT.

Comments on other economic factors

  • IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE OPERATION THE COMPANY WOULD PRODUCE A SYNTHETIC RUTILE. THIS WOULD BE SOLD FOR THE MAN- UFACTURE OF HIGH QUALITY PIGMENT. THE SECOND PHASE INVOLVES A PLANT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TITANIUM SPONGE. IT IS ESTIMATED THE TOTAL MINE LIFE WILL BE APPROX. 110 YRS.
  • A PATENTED HYDROCHLORIC ACID LEACHING PROCESS FOR MAKING T102, DEVELOPED BY NEW ZEALAND DSIR, IS BEING PRESENTLY EV- ALUATED FOR FLETCHER-CHALLENGE BY BATTELLE INSTITUTE AND ISHIHARA, JAPAN. IN ACTUALITY, THERE IS TWO CONCENTRATORS THAT THE ORE IS FED 70; A WET CONCENTRATOR ATTACHED TO THE DREDGE AND A DRY CONCENTRATOR NEARBY. HOWEVER, THEY ARE TREATED AS ONE (K1)."K2" IS THE SYNTHETIC RUTILE PLANT. FLETCHER-CHALLENGE PLANS ON REPLACING THIS PLANT WITH ONE THAT PRODUCES TITAIUM SPONGE METAL. THE METHOD USED IN K2 IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FLUID BED CHLORINATOR PROCESS USED IN THE SYNTHETIC RUTILE PLANT
  • THE REFINERY CUSTOM CHARGE IS FOR THE SYNTHETIC RUTILE PLANT. THE OP.COST FOR KI IS FOR BOTH THE WET ANO DRY CONCERN- TRATORS COMBINED. THE COSTS FOR "K2" ARE FOR THE SYNTHETIC RUTILE PLANT.
