  • THE BASEMENT ROCKS ARE STEEPLY DIPPING PRECAMBRIAN AGE BAUXITIZATION OCCURRED DURING A LONG PERIOD OF HUMID TROPICAL WEATHERING. THE PENEPLAIN WAS PARTLY ERODED AND DISSECTED IN THE PLEISTOCENE LEAVING RELIC LATERITE COVERED HILLS.

  • COOPER (1936) MENTIONS SMALL DEPOSITS IN AETWA RANGE. BY 1967 "SIGNIFICANT TONNAGES OF LOW-GRADE BAUXITE HAD BEEN DISCOVERED. FURTHER EXPLORATION IN 1968-1969. TEST DRILLING BY BASCOL IN PREP. FOR FEASIBILITY STUDY COMPLET- ED BY 1974. 1969: STATED THAT 5-7 YEARS NEEDED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF MINE AND CONSTRUCTION OF REFINERY. MAY 1974: AGREEMENT SIGNED BETWEEN BASCOL AND GOVT.OF GHANA FOR TECH.& FEAS.STUDIES TO BE COMPLETE BY 1975. EST.COST IN 1974 WAS $160,000,000. BASCOL WAS A JV OF KAISER AND ARDECO (A CONSORTIUM OF 5 JAPANESE AL SMELTING COS.). EARLY 1976: ARDECO PULLED OUT OF PROJECT BECAUSE OF INTERNAL PROBLEMS-20% SHARE TRANSFERRED TO KAISER.
