Deposit THE ORE FROM THE NAKETY MINE IS SHIPPED DIRECTLY TO JAPAN. BECAUSE OF MARKET CONDITIONS IN 1978, THE TOTAL ORE PRODUCT- ION OF THE PETITS MINEURS FELL ABOUT 40% COMPARED TO THAT OF 1977. PRODUCTION RETURNED TO NORMAL BY 1979. THE SMALL MINES DO NOT HAVE NEARBY PORT FACILITIES. BECAUSE THE WATER OFF THE COAST OF NEW CALEDONIA IS GENERALLY SHALLOW, ORE TRANSPORT FROM THE WHARVES TO THE SHIPS IS NORMALLY CARRIED OUT BY NUMEROUS LIGHTER VESSELS, THUS ADDING CONSIDERABLY TO THE COSTS AND TIME INVOLVED. THE Q-RESERVE DATA WAS DERIVED FROM DIMENSIONAL AND UNPUB- LISHED DATA. FROM THE SMELTER, PRODUCT "A" IS SOLD" F.O.", WHILE PRODUCT "B" IS SENT TO A REFINERY. AT THAT POINT, PRODUCT "C" IS SOLD "F.O.B."
