Comments on the location information

  • Political location in record is Fergus county. However, original lat/long plots 18 km inside adjacent Judith Basin county. The reference is unpublished and will be difficult to check. Original coordinates were: lat/long NAD27 47-17-0N 110-22-0W (47.2833 -110.3667); UTM N5236626 E547895 Z12N; PLSS line# 1: Meridian- Montana Principal, TWNSHP 018 N, RNG 018 E, Sect 30, Sect_fract <blank>. PLSS coords translate to 47.295 -109.479. The latitude is close to agreement but the longitude differs by 0.888 degrees (53 minutes). There are several Bonanza Group gold deposits at a similar latitude but way west in Mineral county, probably not relevant. A gold deposit in the vicinity of the original lat/long would be anomalous. All nearby deposits are industrial minerals. In contrast, the PLSS location lies near a rich gold mining area (Kendall 10269407). So the lat/long was changed to the PLSS coordinates, agreeing with the county name.
