Comments on the geologic information

  • THE URUP MINE EXPLOITS A TABULAR DEPOSIT WITH A STRIKE LENGTH OF 1,500 METERS AND A DIP OF 15 TO 45 DEGREES TO THE SOUTH. THE DEPOSIT IS INTENSELY FAULTED WITH DISPLACEMENTS RANGING FROM A FEW MILLIMETERS UP TO 120 METERS. THE DEPOSIT EXTENDS BENEATH THE URUP RIVER. MINERALIZATION IS HOSTED BY QUARTZITES, TUFFS, AND SILICIFIED SHALE. CALCITE AND CHLORITE ARE IMPORTANT GANGUE MINERALS. THE ORE IS OXIDIZED TO A DEPTH OF 150 METERS, AND PARTIALLY OXIDIZED ORE PERSISTS TO A DEPTH OF 250 METERS. THE URUP DEPOSIT IS ONE OF THE MAJOR DEPOSITS IN THE CAUCASUS AREA, ALONG WITH THE KHUDOSSKOYE, THE KIZEL-DERE, AND OTHER DEPOSITS.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • RESERVES AT URUP ARE SUFFICIENT FOR A FURTHER 30 YEARS OF PRODUCTION OR APPROXIMATELY 14 MILLION METRIC TONS. IT IS ALSO REPORTED THAT THE COPPER GRADE WILL INCREASE DURING THIS PERIOD. THE CUT-OFF GRADE IS 0.6 PERCENT COPPER.

Comments on other economic factors

  • ALL ORE IS DELIVERED BY ROAD TO THE URUP CONCENTRATOR WHICH IS 14 KILOMETERS FROM THE MINE.
  • THE URUP DEPOSIT IS MINED BY UNDERGROUND METHODS. ACCESS TO THE DEPOSIT IS VIA THE MAIN SHAFT WHICH IS 630 METERS DEEP. THERE ARE TWO FURTHER SHAFTS. FOUR MINING METHODS ARE USED: OPEN STOPING WITH PILLARS, ROOM AND PILLAR, ROOM AND PILLAR WITH BACKFILLING, AND SUBLEVEL CAVING. CURRENT WORKING LEVELS ARE BETWEEN 330 METERS AND 410 METERS BELOW THE SURFACE. THE MINE OPERATES THREE SHIFTS PER DAY FOR 252 DAYS PER YEAR. ORE RECOVERY IS 84.5 PERCENT AND DILUTION IS 26.5 PERCENT. TRACKED HAULAGE IS USED. ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES, DUMP CARS, SCRAPER WINCHES, AND DRILLING RIGS ARE ALL OF SOVIET ORIGIN. THE COST OF MINING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE IN 1990 WAS R11.68.
