Comments on the geologic information

  • GALENA IS ARGENTIFEROUS. SPHALERITE IS PRESENT AT VASSBO BUT ABSENT AT GUTTUSJO.
  • ORE MINERALS FILL THE INTERSTICES IN THE QUARTZ SANDSTONE. THE QUARTZ SANDSTONE IS UNDERLAIN BY A CALCAREOUS SANDSTONE AND OVERLAIN BY A PHOSPHORITE BED AND AN ALUM SHALE. DEPOSIT FORMED BY LOW TEMPERATURE HYDROTHERMAL SOLUTIONS. STRIKE: N10W.
  • HISTORY GIVEN IS FOR GUTTUSJO MINE. VASSBO WAS DISCOVERED IN 1948 BY TRACING LEAD-RICH BOULDERS IN THE GLACIAL BOULDER TRAIN TO THEIR SOURCE. THE MINE OPENED IN 1960. KNOWLEDGE THAT ORE OCCURS WHERE THE QUARTZ SANDSTONE THICKENS, THE RESULT OF EROSIONAL DEPRESSIONS OCCURRING OVER DIABASE DIKES IN THE BASEMENT ROCK, LEAD TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE DEPOSIT AT THE GUTTUSJO MINE

Deposit PINCOCK, ALLEN AND HOLT NOTIFIED THE BUREAU OF MINES ON 2/1/5/82 THAT THEY HAD LEARNED THROUGH PERSONAL CONTACTS THAT BOLIDEN HAD EXHAUSTED ORE RESOURCES AT VASSBO AND WOULD NOT OPEN GUTTSJO BECAUSE THE ORE GRADE HAD PROVED TO BE ERRATIC IN GRADE AND TONNAGE.
