Deposit NUMEROUS (AT LEAST 600) PODIFORM CHROMITE OCCURRENCES ON THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE OMAN MOUNTAINS, NORTH OF THE CITY OF SOHAR. CO.BEGAN PRODUCTION IN 1982/1983 FROM DEPOSITS NEAR VILLAGES OF RAJMI AND NAKHL BUT ONLY 8,000 MT SHIPPED AS OF END 1989. DETAILED STUDY HAD OUTLINED ORE RESERVE OF ABOUT 1,000,000 MT AT 36 DEPOSITS BY END 1989 AND SEVEN NEW CHROMITE "FIELDS" WERE BEING EVALUATED (INCLUDING THE RAJMI-FIZH AND THE FARFAR-HILTI AREAS). OTHER SOURCE SAY 1,600,000 MT RESERVE PRELIMINARY PLANS FOR A 25,000-50,000 MTPY HIGH-C FECR SMELTER AT MAJAN, NEAR SOHAR BUT DEPENDENT ON ADEQUACY OF RESERVES.
