Comments on the production information

  • IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE DILUTION, IT IS PLANNED TO INCREASE THE VERTICAL SPACING OF THE SUB-LEVELS FROM 6 TO 20 METERS AND TO BACK-FILL USING DEVELOPMENT WASTE TAILINGS AND SAND OR GRAVEL. LOADING IS CARRIED OUT USING SEVEN FRENCH LOADER MICROSCOOPS. SOME OF THE WASTE IS REMOVED UNDERGROUND BY HANDSORTING. BETWEEN 1982 AND 1989, 650,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE GRADING AN AVERAGE OF 2.6% CU WERE PRODUCED. OPERATING DAYS PER YEAR WERE ASSUMED TO BE 250. MINING JOURNAL RESEARCH SERVICES REPORT THAT THE ORE FROM THE SHKODER MINE, WHICH TYPICALLY GRADES 1 PERCENT COPPER, IS PROCESSED WITHIN THE MINE SITE. APPROXIMATELY 20,000 TONS PER YEAR OF ORE GRADING 2.8 PERCENT COPPER IS PRODUCED AND RAILED TO LAC FOR SMELTING. EXPLORATION TO INCREASE THE ORE RESERVES IS CONTINUING IN THE SURROUNDING AREA.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THE KARMA II MINE HAS RESERVES OF APPROXIMATELY 600,000 METRIC TONS AT 2.5% CU. THESE ARE INCLUDED IN THE TOTAL RESERVE FIGURE.

Comments on other economic factors

  • ALL OF THE MINES HAVE WORKINGS AT DEPTHS BETWEEN 100 AND 300 METERS. ONE MAIN SHAFT IS USED IN THE MINE WHICH MEASURES 3 METERS IN DIAMETER AND 120 METERS DEEP WITH A CAPACITY OF 60,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR. THERE ARE ALSO SEVERAL ADITS AND AN INCLINE WHICH WILL EXTEND INTO THE KARMA II MINE. TUNNELS ARE SPREAD 6 METERS APART (VERTICAL) AND 7 TO 10 METERS APART HORIZONTALLY. BLOCKS OF 30 METERS ARE PRE-DRILLED AND BLASTED; ORE IS THEN DRAWN OFF IN ORE PASSES. 88% TO 90% OF THE ORE IS RECOVERED WITH A DILUTION OF APPROXIMATELY 10% TO 15%. ROOF CONDITIONS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE GOOD. THE CAPACITY OF THE THREE MINES IS 75,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR. A NEW 100,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR CAPACITY VERTICAL SHAFT IS PLANNED.
  • 15,000 TO 16,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR OF HIGHER GRADE ORE AND 4,000 TO 5,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR OF CU CONCENTRATES ARE SENT TO THE LAC SMELTER IN ALBANIA. 22,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR OF HIGHER GRADE ORE IS SENT DIRECTLY TO THE RUBIK SMELTER. ORE THAT IS GREATER THAN 50 MM IS SENT DIRECTLY TO EITHER THE LAC OR RUBIK SMELTER. ORE LESS THAN 50 MM IS SENT TO THE ADJACENT DRESSING PLANT, WHICH HAS A CAPACITY OF 60,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR.
  • THE PALAJ MINE IS EXPECTED TO CLOSE AT THE END OF 1990 AND THE KARMA I MINE IS EXPECTED TO CLOSE AT THE END OF 1992. THE KARMA II MINE IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT BUT IS SUPPOSED TO COME ON-STREAM IN 1992.
