Comments on other economic factors

  • NO CHANGE IN SURFACE MINING CAPACITY AFTER INCREASE IN PRODUCTION CAPACITY. GREATER PRODUCTION DUE TO INCREASED RECOVERIES FROM MILL (97.5%) AND UPGRADED SMELTER.
  • QIT UPGRADED POWER CAPACITY OF 2 OF ITS NINE FURNACES TO INCREASE CAPACITY TO 1.1 MMT TIO2 SLAG AND .9 MMT PIG IRON MILL RECOVERY HAS BEEN INCREASED TO 97.5% BY DECREASING PROPORTION OF GANGUE IN THE FEED.

Deposit THE ALLARD LAKE ILMENITE DEPOSITS LIE WITHIN A LARGE OVAL SHAPED ANORTHOSITIC INTRUSION. THE DEPOSITS OCCUR AS MASSIVE,MEDIUM TO COARSE GRAINED DYKES, SILLS, LENSES, OR IRREGULAR BODIES BELIEVED TO BE GENETICALLY RELATED TO THE ANORTHOSITE. THE LARGEST IS THE HEART SHAPED LAC TIO. THE PROCESSING FACILITIES OF THE LAC TIO ORE ARE LOCATED IN THE TOWN OF SOREL WHICH IS SITUATED AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE ST. LAWERENCE AND RICHELIEU RIVERS. SOREL PRODUCES TWO MAIN PRODUCTS, A SLAG RICH IN TIO2 AND A HIGH PURITY PIG IRON. QIT-FER ET TITANE INC. IS OWNED 2/3RDS BY KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. AND 1/3RD BY NEW JERSEY ZINC CO. NO SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ARE EVIDENT AS MILL TAILINGS FROM BENIFICIATED ORE AMOUNT TO ONLY 10-12% OF THE TREATED ORE. THESE,HOWEVER ARE EVENTUALLY REMOVED AND USED IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION. THIS RESERVE REPRESENTS THE LAC TIO N.W.,MAIN,AND CLIFF OREBODIES ONLY. IT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE FACT THAT THE TOTAL RESERVES IN THE ALLARD LAKE PROPERTY AT THE END OF 1978 WERE 218,440,000 MT @ 31 % TIO2 AND FEO @ 45.8 %. THE MINE ONLY PRODUCES ORE 160 D/YR (SUMMER MONTHS). THE OTHER 90 D/YR (TOTAL DAYS MINE OPERATES = 250) ARE SPENT ON EQUIPMENT REPAIR AND SIMILAR TASKS.
