  • THIS MINE IS LOCATED WITHIN THE BULQIZA MASSIF, APPROXIMATELY 20 KILOMETERS SOUTHEAST OF THE MAIN BULQIZA OPERATIONS. THERE IS NO GEOLOGICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OREBODIES AT TERNOVA AND THOSE AT BULQIZA. TERNOVA PRODUCES SOME 30,000 TONS PER YEAR OF ORE GRADING 30 TO 41 PERCENT CR2O3. EXPLORATION IS CONTINUING AROUND THE MINE TO DELINEATE FURTHER RESERVES.

  • RESERVES WERE ESTIMATED BY C.R.U. TO BE ONE-HALF OF THE COMBINED RESERVES OF NEWPOINTS/TERNOVE, WHICH IS EQUAL TO 100,000 METRIC TONS. C.R.U. REPORTED THAT TOTAL MILL PRODUCTION IN 1989 WAS 150,000 METRIC TONS OF CONCENTRATE.
  • ALL INFORMATION BECAME AVAILABLE IN EARLY 1990 (AFTER NETWORK FLOW MODEL BUILT). AS OF 1988, 30,000 MTPY ROM AT 35-42 % CR2O3. ALL EXPORTED. THE GRADE IS THE HEADGRADE WHICH PROBABLY INCLUDES DILUTION. NOTE, THAT THE TEMOVA MINE IS ONE OF FOUR MINES IN THE BULQIZE MINING DISTRICT.   • SOME OF THE TOTEL ORE FROM TERNOVE IS SENT TO THE KLOS DRESSING PLANT. A PROCESSING PLANT NEAR THE MINE SITE HAS A CAPACITY OF 240,000 TONS PER YEAR. THE PLANT IS A STATE-RUN ENTERPRIZE, WHICH ALSO HANDLES UP TO 150,000 TONS PER YEAR OF ORE FROM OTHER OPERATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, THE PLANT PROCESSES THE ORE FROM THE SOUTHERN BULQIZA MINE, WHICH IS A LOW-GRADE CHROMITE MINE PRODUCING 3 MILLION TONS AT 7 TO 14 PERCENT CR2O3 NEAR THE MAIN BULQIZA MINE.

Deposit THE TEMOVA MINE, PART OF THE BULQIZA DISTRICT, IS SITUATED WITHIN THE BULQIZA MASSIF, FOUND EAST-NORTHEAST OF TIRANA. THE BULQIZA MINING DISTRICT PRODUCES SOME 200,000 TONS OF ORE PER YEAR, AND IS THE MAIN SOURCE OF HIGH-GRADE METALLURGICAL CHROMITE. PRODUCTION IS ANTICIPATED TO INCREASE BY MORE THAN 50 PERCENT, TO 320,000 TONS PER YEAR, WHEN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A DECLINE, WHICH IS AN ACCESS ROAD THAT SPIRALS DOWNWARDS AND IS USUALLY IN THE FOOTWALL OF THE OREBODY, HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DECLINE WILL INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DRAW AND ACCESS POINTS AND WAS RECOMMENDED AFTER A STUDY OF THE BULQIZA MINING AND PROCESSING FACILITIES WAS CARRIED OUT BY GERMAN MINING ENGINEERS IN 1991. THE STUDY HELPED DETERMINE THE TECHNOLOGY AND FOREIGN INVESTMENT REQUIRED TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE MINE AND PROCESSING FACILITY. THE OREBODY CONSISTS OF A TWO TO SIX METER THICK FOLDED LAYERS OF CHROMITE ORE, ENVELOPED IN A DUNITIC HALO, SURROUNDED BY SERPENTINISED HARZBURGITE. POST-MINERALIZATION TECTONICS HAS DEVELOPED MANY FAULTS WHICH DISLOCATE THE ORE BY 50 METERS, HOWEVER FAULT DISPLACEMENTS TEND TO AVERAGE AROUND TWO METERS. THE GEOLOGIC RESOURCE IS ESTIMATED TO BE IN THE ORDER OF 20 MILLION TONS OF WHICH RECOVERABLE RESERVES ARE ESTIMATED AT 5 MILLION TONS AT A GRADE OF 46 TO 52 PERCENT CR2O3. WITH THE OREBODY OPEN DOWN DIP AND ALONG STRIKE, THERE IS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR A DOUBLING OF RESERVES. THIS CHROMITE ORE DISPLAYS A FULL RANGE OF TEXTURES WHICH ARE: NODULAR, MASSIVE, AND DISSEMINATED. THE MOST ABUNDANT ORE TYPE IS THE DISSEMINATED FORM, WHICH CONSISTS OF UNIFORM DISSEMINATIONS OF THE CHROME-SPINEL GRAINS COMPRISING 65 TO 80 PERCENT OF THE ROCK. THE DISSEMINATED ORE IS PREDOMINATELY MEDIUM-GRAINED, 1 TO 5 MILLIMETERS, CONSISTING OF THE CHROME-SPINEL OF THE MAGNOCHROMITE TYPE. THE HIGH-GRADE SECTIONS OF THE OREBODY CAN CONTAIN UP TO 55 PERCENT CR2O3, WHILE THE LOWER GRADE SECTIONS CARRY ABOUT 19 PERCENT CR2O3. GANGUE MINERALS INCLUDE OLIVINE, SERPENTINE, TALC, MAGNESITE, AND TREMOLITE. THERE ARE RARE OCCURRENCES OF SULPHIDES SUCH AS PENTLANDITE, PYRRHOTITE, AND PYRITE HAVE BEEN RECORDED.
