Comments on the production information

  • THE AVERAGE GRADE OF THE COPPER BLISTER IS 99%. THE RECOVERY RATES FOR THE SMELTER ARE APPROXIMATELY 86%. COMMODITIES RESEARCH UNIT LIMITED REPORTS THAT KUKES RECEIVES 100,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE PER YEAR WITH GRADES OF 2.9% CU FROM GJEGJAN. KUKES ALSO RECEIVES 15,000 METRIC TONS OF CONCENTRATE PER YEAR WITH GRADES OF APPROXIMATELY 16% CU FROM GOLAJ AND FUSHE ARREZ. THE AVERAGE OPERATING DAYS FOR THE KUSKE SMELTER IS ASSUMED TO BE 250 DAYS PER YEAR. KUKES SMELTER HAS A 25,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR AGGLOMERATION CIRCUIT FOR ORE SHIPPED TO THE SMELTER. COMMODITIES RESEARCH UNIT LIMITED REPORTS THAT THE CAPACITY AT KUKES SMELTER IS APPROXIMATELY 6,000 METRIC TONS OF BLISTER PER YEAR.

Comments on the workings information

  • THERE ARE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS ABOUT THE KUKES SMELTER. THE REASON FOR THIS IS BECAUSE THE SMELTER IS ALLOWED TO RELEASE SULPHUR DIOXIDE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. THE SMELTER COMPENSATES NEIGHBORING FARMING ENTERPRISES FOR THIS GASEOUS RELEASE.

Comments on other economic factors

  • ALL BLISTER PRODUCT IS SENT TO THE ANODE FURNACE LOCATED AT LAC.
  • THE TECHNOLOGY USED AT KUKES SMELTER IS OUTDATED AND ESTIMATED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 60 YEARS OLD. THE SMELTER HAS THREE EIGHT TON CONVERTERS, HOWEVER ONLY ONE CONVERTER WORKS AT ANY ONE TIME. ONE OF THE TWO REMAINING CONVERTERS IS REPAIRED WHILE THE THIRD CONVERTER IS HELD ON STANDBY.
  • THE KUKES SMELTER MAY BE FORCED TO CLOSE IN 1995 DUE TO DECLINING RESERVES AT GJEGJAN.
