Comments on the production information

  • FOR THE NORILSK COPPER SMELTER, COPPER CONCENTRATES ARE SUPPLIED FROM THE NORILSK CONCENTRATOR, LOCATED IN THE TOWN OF NORILSK, AND FROM THE TALNAKH CONCENTRATOR, WHICH IS ABOUT 40 KILOMETERS AWAY. NOTE THAT TRANSPORTATION COSTS AND DISTANCES WERE IRRELEVANT WHEN THE USSR WAS STILL INTACT. ADDITIONALLY, SOME HIGH GRADE DIRECT SMELTING ORE IS RECEIVED FROM THE OCTYABR MINE WHICH IS ALSO ABOUT 40 KILOMETERS AWAY. THE SMELTER USES THE VANYUKOV PROCESS IN ITS SMELTING OPERATIONS. THE MATTE IS CONVERTED TO BLISTER COPPER IN EIGHT HORIZONTAL 80 TON CAPACITY CONVERTERS WHICH ARE FUELLED BY NATURAL GAS AND AIR, WITHOUT ANY OXYGEN ENRICHMENT. THE GASES ARE THEN RELEASED TO THE ATMOSPHERE. ALL OF THE COPPER BLISTER IS FIRE REFINED IN TWO 5.4 METER DIAMETER REVERBERATORY-TYPE FURNACES. THE COPPER IS FINALLY CAST INTO ANODES.
  • THE PRODUCTION TABLES FOR THE NORILSK COPPER SMELTER AND REFINERY ALSO GIVE THE PRODUCTION VALUES FOR THE NADEZDHA METALLURGICAL PLANT INTERMIXED WITH THOSE VALUES FOR THE NORILSK SMELTER/REFINERY, THUS IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO SEPARATE THE TWO PLANTS STATISTICALLY. THE NADEZDHA METALLURGICAL PLANT TREATS NICKEL-COPPER CONCENTRATES.
