Comments on the production information

  • THERE ARE THREE CIRCUITS IN OPERATION AT THE PRESENT TIME. THE FIRST WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1981, THE SECOND IN 1982, AND THE THIRD IN 1987. A FOURTH CIRCUIT IS DUE TO START UP IN 1992. THE RUN-OF-MINE ORE IS REDUCED IN A PRIMARY CONE CRUSHER. THE UNDERSIZE IS FED TO A HEAVY MEDIA PLANT WHICH SEPARATES A HEAVY MASSIVE SULPHIDE FRACTION FROM A LIGHTER DISSEMINATED ORE FRACTION. THE TWO FRACTIONS ARE PROCESSED SEPARATELY. THE TAILINGS ARE PUMPED IN SLURRY BY PIPELINE TO A DAM LOCATED 20 KILOMETERS FROM THE CONCENTRATOR. IN 1990, THE COST OF MILLING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE WAS R8.50.

Comments on other economic factors

  • IN 1990, ALL ORE WAS SUPPLIED BY THREE MINES IN THE TALNAKHY AREA, THE KOMSOMOL MINE, THE OKTYABR MINE, AND THE TAIMIR MINE. ALL ARE LOCATED WITHIN 5 KILOMETERS OF THE CONCENTRATOR. COPPER CONCENTRATES ARE DELIVERED TO THE NORILSK COPPER SMELTER AND TO THE NADEZHDA METALLURGICAL PLANT, A NICKEL SMELTER, WHICH IS ALSO OPERATED BY NORILSK ENTERPRISE. CONCENTRATE IS PUMPED TO TO THE NADEZHDA WORKS IN THE FORM OF A SLURRY.
