| Deposit | THE DEPOSIT WAS DISCOVERED IN 1971 IN THE COURSE OF EXPLORING AND EVALUATING THE CARAJAS IRON DEPOSITS. PRODUCTION, STARTING IN 1985, WAS FACILITATED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE NEARBY IRON ORE DEPOSITS, INCLUDING A 900 KM RAILROAD TO A PORT AT SAO LUIS. THESE DEPOSITS LIE BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH LIMBS OF A SYNCLINORIUM COMPOSED OF THE PRECAMBRIAN GRAO PARA GROUP OF METASEDIMENTS, IRON FORMATION, AND VOLCANIC ROCKS. THE DEPOSITS LIE ABOVE MANGANIFEROUS PELITIC SHALES OF THE RIO FRESCO FORMATION THAT UNCONFORMABLY OVERLIES THE GRAO PARA GROUP. THE IN-PLACE ORE WAS DERIVED FROM WEATHERING OF TWO SHALY PROTORE BEDS RUNNING 14 TO 36 PCT MN AND AN INTERVENING LAYER RUNNING ONLY 2 TO 4 PCT MN. RESOURCES HAVE BEEN DEPICTED AS 65 MT IN TOTAL, ALTHOUGH MUCH OF THIS MATERIAL IS MOT APPLCABLE TO PRODUCTION AT THIS TIME. THERE ARE SEVERAL ZONES OF MANGANIFEROUS MATERIAL WITHIN THE DEPOSIT, AS LISTED BELOW. A. MANGANESE CARBONATE BEARING SHALE. B. TRANSITION MNO2 ZONE, NOT BATTERY ACTIVE NOR ADAPTABLE TO PROCESSING BECAUSE OF ITS FINENESS AND SOFT NATURE. C. PELITIC ZONE-MANGANIFEROUS SHALE (25-30% MN). D. DETRITAL ZONE-ORE ZONE. E. MANGANESE BEARING PISOLITIC ZONE (10-15% MN). RESOURCES IN THE DETRITAL ZONE AMOUNT TO ABOUT 22 MT, AND ANOTHER 11 MT HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED FOR BATTERY GRADE ORE WHICH OCCURS IN ZONES WITHIN THE DETRITAL ZONE; THIS COULD HAVE ABOUT 32 MT FOR THE PELITIC ZONE (AND POSSIBLY THE TRANSITION ZONE). TESTS ON THE PELITIC NATERIAL INDICATE THAT ONLY A 38% MN CONCENTRATE COULD BE PRODUCED WITH A 29% LUMP RECOVERY. MINING IS BY OPEN PIT AND CONCENTRATION IS BY SCREENING AND WASHING. THE CONCENTRATE IS TRUCK HAULED ABOUT 39 KM TO THE CARAJAS IRON ORE LOADING AREA, WHERE IT IS STOCKPILED UNTIL A TRAINLOAD IS ACCUMULATED, THEN LOADED BY FRONT END LOADER. THE MAIN DISADVANTAGE OF THE ORE IS ITS SOFTNESS WHICH PRODUCES AN ABUNDANCE OF FINES THAT ARE NOT MARKETABLE UNLESS SINTERED. THERE IS AN ENORMOUS STOCKPILE OF THIS "SINTER FEED" PRESENTLY OT THE MINE. |
