Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THE TOTAL INFERRED RESOURCES ARE 250 MILLION METRIC TONS. THE COMMODITY MINERALS ARE SIDERITE WITH A GRADE OF 33.7 PERCENT IRON, LIMONITE WITH A GRADE OF 42.7 PERCENT IRON, AND HEMATITE WITH A GRADE OF 31.9 PERCENT IRON. THERE IS A 75 PERCENT CERTAINTY THAT THE VARES IRON MINE CONTAINS 250,000,000 METRIC TONS OF IRON ORE.

Comments on other economic factors

  • SURFACE RESOURCES ARE CLOSE TO EXHAUSTION. SURFACE MINING COULD CLOSE BY 1992. STRIPPING RATIOS HAVE INCREASED FROM 1.42:1 IN 1984 TO 7:1 IN 1988. THE EQUIPMENT IS RUSSIAN MADE.
  • UNDERGROUND MINING BY BLOCK-CAVING IS UTILIZED. IT IS UNLIDELY THAT THE OPERATION WILL REMAIN COMPETITIVE AFTER SURFACE RESOURCES ARE EXHAUSTED AND THE MINE HAS TO DEPEND SOLELY ON UNDERGROUND RESOURCES.
  • ALL OUTPUT IS SHIPPED TO ZENICA STEELWORKS.
