Comments on the geologic information

  • THE RESERVES KNOWN AS MINING AREA "C" COVER AN AREA OF 2,130 SQ KM AND ARE SITUATED IN THE HAMERSLEY RANGES BETWEEN MT. NEWMAN AND MT. TOM PRICE. THE MARRA MAMBA IRON FORMATION IS THE LOWEST MEMBER OF THE HAMERSLEY GROUP AND PERSISTS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE OF THE HAMERSLEY IRON PROVINCE. IN GENERAL THE FORMATION CAN BE DESCRIBED AS A CHERTY BANDED IRON FORMATION, WITH A DISTINCT INCREASE IN THE IRON CONTENT IN THE TOP 100 METRES. GENTLE TO MODERATE FOLDING OF THE ROCK UNITS WITHIN THE AREA HAS LED TO THE FORMATION OF ELONGATE EAST-WEST SYN- CLINES AND ANTICLINES, AND THE RESISTANT BANDED IRON FORMATION MEMBERS FORM PROMINENT EAST-WEST TRENDING RANGES ALONG THE LIMBS AND CORES OF THESE FOLD STRUCTURES. THE ORE USUALLY COMPRISES AN UPPER HYDRATED GOETHITIC ZONE, VARYING FROM 5 TO 30 METRES IN THICKNESS, OVERLYING A TYPICAL BANDED HEMATITE/GOETHITE ORE ZONE, THE INDIVIDUAL BANDS NORMALLY VARYING IN THICKNESS FROM 2 MM TO 20 MM. THE GOETHITE IN THE UPPER HYDRATED ZONE IS HIGH IN SILICA AND IS TOUGH, BROWN AND SEMI-TRANSLUCENT, WHEREAS THE GOETHITE IN THE UNALTERED ZONE BENEATH IS SOFTER, MORE POROUS AND OCHREOUS IN NATURE. IN THE UNALTERED ZONE, MARTITE IS ALSO PRESENT IN SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS IN NARROW VEINS AND POCKETS.

Comments on other economic factors

  • MAC IS CURRENTLY A NONPRODUCING PROPERTY, THE COSTS AND CAPACITIES LISTED HERE ARE ESTIMATED FOR THE YEAR 1987, WHEN THE MINE AND MILL ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN FULL PRODUCTION.
  • THE BROCKMAN IRON FORMATION IN THIS AREA HAS RELATIVELY HIGH PHOSPHORUS CONTENT AND THEREFORE IS NOT WELL SUITED FOR MINING. MINING WILL BE FROM THE MARRA MAMBA IRON FORMATION WHICH HAS LOWER PHOSPHORUS CONTENT.
