Comments on the geologic information

  • OTHER MINERALS PRESENT INCLUDE MINNESOTAITE, STILPNOMELANE, GREENALITE & SIDERITE.
  • WITHIN RANGE 17W THE BIWABIK FORMATION HAS BEEN DEFORMED INTO A PRONOUNCED DOUBLE BEND FORMING A BROAD ANTICLINE AND SYNCLINE. THESE ARE THE ONLY REGIONAL-SCALE FOLDS IN THE MESABI RANGE. THE TOTAL OUTCROP WIDTH OF THE MINEABLE MAGNETIC TACONITE, INCLUDING ROCK-IN-ORE ZONES, RANGES FROM ABOUT 1200- 1920 METERS. THE DIP VARIES FROM ABOUT 4 TO 15 DEGREES WITH A COMMON DIP OF 7 TO 10 DEGREES. STEEP DIPS (GREATER THAN 10 DEGREES) ARE VERY LOCAL. THE PERCENTAGE MINERAL COMPOSITION OF THE BIWABIK FORMATION IS VARIABLE BUT CONTAINS THE SAME MINERALS THROUGHOUT THE POTENTIAL ORE ZONES. LENGTH AND WIDTH REFER TO THE ENTIRE BIWABIK FORMATION OF RANGE 17W. THICKNESS REFERS TO AVERAGE THICKNESS OF THE TACONITE UNITS OF RANGE 17W. HOST ROCK IS METASEDIMENT.
