Comments on the production information

  • K AND LI ARE REPORTED AS OXIDES, ALTHOUGH THEY EXIST AS IONS IN THE LAKE BRINES. K2O AND LI2O ARE STANDARD ASSAY FORMULAS UNIVERSALLY ADOPTED BY THE POTASH AND LITHIUM-FROM-BRINE INDUSTRIES. CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS PRODUCED ON SITE BY REACTING OOLITIC SANDS, WHICH ARE VERY COMMON IN AND AROUND THE GREAT SALT LAKE, WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID, WHICH IS PRODUCED IN THE MELT AND REACTOR CELLS. MINING OF THE SANDS IS LOW COST, WITH ONE FRONT END LOADER BEING USED PART-TIME TO PROVIDE OOLITIC SANDS FROM SEVERAL SURFACE SITES AROUND THE PLANT. THE SANDS ARE BALL-MILLED, PLACED INTO A REACTOR VESSEL, CONTACTED WITH HCL, ALLOWED TO "DIGEST" IN ANOTHER TANK, THICKENED, AND SHIPPED OR USED ON-SITE FOR ACID NEUTRALIZATION AND FOR DESULFURI- ZATION. NO DATA ARE AVAILABLE ON THE AMOUNT OF CACL2 PRODUCED OR SHIPPED. THE BUREAU OF MINES DOES NOT MAINTAIN PRODUCTION DATA ON NON-NATURAL CACL2 PRODUCTION. AMAX PRODUCES ABOUT 51000 METRIC TONS OF CHLORINE A YEAR, WITH 18000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR BEING SHIPPED AND USED IN THE YIELD AND OUTPUT CALCULATIONS OF THIS STUDY. THE EXACT RECOVERY AND GRADE USED TO CALCULATE CHLORINE OUTPUT ARE PROVIDED IN SECTION B4 OF THE APPENDIX ACCOMPANYING THE REPORT.
