  • PLANT USES HS SODERBERG TECHNOLOGY. A CONTRACT WAS SIGNED IN 1992 TO REFURBISH THE SMELTER. PLANS CALL FOR CONVERTING THE PLANT TO A PREBAKE TECHNOLOGY IF KAISER ENGINEERS ACQUIRED THE NECESSARY FUNDING, PLANS CALL FOR A FIRST STAGE WHERE ONE POTLINE WOULD BE SHUT FOR 3 YRS WHILE POTLINE REBUILT USING KAISER TECHNOLOGY AND EXPANDED TO A CAPACITY OF 55,000. IN THE SECOND STAGE, THE SECOND POTLINE WOULD BE REBUILT. TIME TABLE REPORTED TO BE 1996 FOR PHASE 1; 1998 FOR PHASE 2 COST FOR ENTIRE EXPANSION $281 MILLION. TO BE PAID FOR PARTIALLY BY SHIPMENTS OF ALUMINUM.
