Deposit MINING BEGAN IN ABOUT 1900 FROM A SMALL UNDERGROUND MINE; AND WAS RELATIVELY CONTINUOUS SINCE. SHIPPING BEGAN IN 1950 AND THE OPEN PIT WAS PHASED INTO SUPPLY ALL THE ORE BY 1966. THE OVERBURDEN IS UNCONSOLIDATED GRAVEL WHICH IS DOGED INTO A CONVEYOR HOPPER FOR REMOVAL, SOME LIMESTONE STRINGERS WITHIN THE ORE HORIZON MUST ALSO BE REMOVED. THE ORE IS RELATIVELY SOFT AND POROUS SO BECAUSE OF THE POROSITY, GROUND WATER ENCROACHES ON THE PIT WHICH REQUIRES CONSIDERABLE EFFORT TO PUMP OUT. BENEFICIATION IS BY SIZING (LUMP) AND HEAVY MEDIA (SINTER FINES); A MAGNETIC SEPARATION PROCESS HAS BEEN PLANNED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, BUT HAS APPARENTLY NOT YET BEEN INSTALLED. THE CONCENTRATES ARE RELATIVELY LOW GRADE (50-54 PCT), BUT THEY ARE SELF FLUXING, AND BECAUSE OF THEIR POROSITY ARE EASY TO SMELT. CAPITAL COSTS HAVE BEEN DEPRECIATED; ANNUAL CAPITAL REPLACEMENT COSTS ARE ESTIMATED ABOUT $1.3 MILLION (MINE) AND $2.5 MILLION (INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE).
