Comments on other economic factors

  • ALUMINA IS SHIPPED FROM GLADSTONE IN QUEENSLAND. ALMOST ALL ALUMINUM PRODUCED IS EXPORTED, MAINLY TO JAPAN.
  • THE SMELTER COST $680 MILLION TO BUILD IN 1983. 1992 PRODUCTION COST REPORTED TO BE ABOUT $1,200 PER METRIC TON.
  • THE SMELTER CONSISTS OF TWO 800M POTLINES, EACH CONTAINING 240 POTS. ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION IS 380 MEGAWATTS PER YEAR, SUPPLIED BY NSW ELECTRICITY COMMISSION. ANNUAL CONSUMPTION INCLUDES 440,000 MT ALUMINA, 3000 MT PET COKE FROM THE US. EXPANSION PLANS INCLUDE: THE MODERNIZATION OF EXISTING CAPACITY INCREASING IT BY ANOTHER 40,000 MT, AN ADDITIONAL ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION OF 240 MW. PECHINEY WILL INVEST $200 MILLION 1991-1993. TOTAL PROJECT COST TO EXCEED $600 MILLION. THE EXPANSION TO 380,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR WAS COMPLETED IN MAY OF 1993.
