Comments on the geologic information

  • VAN HORN (1948) STATES THAT THE TALC DEPOSIT WAS SIMILAR IN SIZE AND GENERAL CONFIGURATION TO THE NANCY JORDAN TALC BODY (HIS DEPOSIT NO. 10), BUT THAT THE OUTLINE OF THE MAIN TALC BODY WAS LESS DEFINITE AND THERE IS A GREATER AMOUNT OF MIXED TALC AND MARBLE. SILICIFIED MARBLE OCCURS AROUND THE TALC BODY AND AS KIDNEYS IN THE TALC. SLATY ROCK ALONG THE FOOTWALL OF THE BODY MAY HAVE BEEN PARTIALLY SERPENTINIZED, ACCORDING TO OLDER REPORTS.

Comments on the production information

  • VAN HORN STATES THAT THE MINE SUPPLIED SOME OF THE FINEST QUALITY TALC EVER PRODUCED IN NORTH CAROLINA. STANDARD GRADES OF PULVERIZED TALC WAS PRODUCED IN LARGE QUANTITY AND APPROXIMATELY 4 PERCENT OF THE TALC WAS CUT INTO CRAYONS.

Workings at the site

  • Type of workings Underground
    Overall depth 47.24M

Comments on the workings information

  • DRIFT LEVELS WERE OPENED FROM THE SHAFT AT THE 56, 82, 104, AND 116 FOOT LEVELS AND COMBINATION DRIFT-SLOPE MINING WAS CARRIED ON IN BOTH DIRECTIONS ALONG THE AXIS OF THE TALC BODY. THE ENCLOSING MARBLE HAD A STRIKE OF N 40 E AND A DIP OF 55 S.

Comments on development

  • FOLLOWING PROSPECTING BY BINNEY AND SMITH COMPANY AROUND 1907, A SHAFT WAS SUNK IN 1916, AND THE PROPERTY OPERATED BY THE COMPANY THROUGH THE NOTLA TALC COMPANY DURING 1927 TO 1934. THE CAROLINA TALC COMPANY TOOK OVER THE MINE IN 1934 AND OPERATED THE MINE FOR THE NOTLA TALC COMPANY UNTIL THE MINE WAS FLOODED IN 1938, WHEN OPERATIONS CEASED. ; ECON.COM: AVERAGE INFLOW OF WATER PRIOR TO FILLING OF HIWASSEE LAKE WAS 250 GPM. DANGER OF FLOODING WOULD BE A FACTOR IN ANY ATTEMPT TO MINE TALC AT THIS LOCALITY.
