Production years 1875-1949, MOST POST 1933

Mining district

District name Vestland District

Comments on the production information

  • ACCURATE PRODUCTION PROBABLY DOES NOT INCLUDE SMALL AMOUNTS OF GOLD SOLD TO LOCAL MERCHANTS AT JICARILLA, ANCHO, AND CARRIZOZO DURING THE 1930'S. ESTIMATED PRODUCTION VALUE UP TO 1931 IS BASED ON GOLD VALUED AT $20/OZ.
  • 1 & 7 = PROD. 1875-1949 FROM BJORLYKKE; 2-6 CALCULATED FROM FOSLIE

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • FANGLOMERATE WITH AN AREA OF 420 ACRES AND THICKNESS OF 7-10 FT HAS AN ESTIMATED VOLUME OF 5.4 MILLION CUBIC YARDS AND GRADE OF 0.043 OZ/YD, THUS CONTAINING ABOUT 8 SHORT TONS OF GOLD

Comments on the workings information

  • NUMEROUS SURFACE WORKINGS ARE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT DISTRICT AND MANY SMALL SHAFTS AND ADITS WERE DUG AT HEAD OF ANCHO GULCH. A LARGE DREDGE OPERATED WEST OF POST OFFICE AT JICARILLA IN 1903.

Comments on development

  • MAY HAVE BEEN MINED BY SPANIARDS IN THE 1700'S. WORKED BY MEXICANS IN THE MID 1800'S. ALL MINING HAS BEEN ON A SMALL SCALE BY INDIVIDUALS. EXPLORATION AND TESTING FROM 1965-1967 BY DR. G.U. GREEN CONSISTED OF 40 PITS, 20 DRILL HOLES, AND 100 TPD PILOT MILL, WHICH OPERATED FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS IN 1966 AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DISMANTLED. NO GOLD WAS SOLD

GOLD IS GENERALLY FINE GRAINED AND DIFFICULT TO EXTRACT. IT IS NOT PARTICULARLY CONCNETRATED IN CHANNELS OR ON BEDROCK AND IS KNOWN FOR ITS ERRATIC VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION. TOTAL AREA OF KNOWN OR PROBABLE PLACER DEPOSITS IS 5-6 SQUARE MI.
