  • EXTENSIVE WORKINGS, MUCH OF WHICH HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO CAVE. PRIMARY ACCESS IS THROUGH THE 1500 LEVEL DRAIN TUNNEL (KEETLEY TUNNEL) AND THROUGH THE ONTARIO NO. 3 SHAFT.

Comments on development

  • RECTOR STEEN DISCOVERED THE OUTCROP IN 1872 AND SOLD TO DEVELOPERS WHO STARTED PRODUCTION IN 1873. THE PROPERTY WAS CONSOLIDATED INTO THE ONTARIO SILVER MINING CO. WHICH OPERATED UNTIL 1936 WHEN IT MERGED WITH THE PARK UTAH CONSOLIDATED MINES CO. THE PARK UTAH MERGED WITH THE SILVER KING COALITION MINES CO. IN 1953 TO FORM THE PRESENT OWNER, THE UNITED PARK CITY MINES CO. PARK CITY VENTURES (60% ANACONDA, 40% ASARCO) LEASED THE ONTARIO IN AUGUST, 1970 AND BUILT A 700 TON PER DAY CONCENTRATER. THEY LATER DROPPED THE LEASE WHICH WAS THEN PICKED UP BY NORANDA LTD. LOW SILVER PRICES AND WATER PROBLEMS FORCED NORANDA TO LATER DROP THE LEASE.
