  • CLASTIC ROCKS TEND TO BE WELL ROUNDED. CASSITERITE MOST COMMONLY PALE GREY; ON DRY FOREST CREEK, TIN IN RECENT ALLUVIUM WAS ROUNDED AND FINE WHERE MUCH OF THE LATTER WAS LOST; ONLY A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF GOLD IS PRESENT BUT IS PERSISTENT.

  • RECENT DEPOSITS HAVE OVERBURDENS COMMONLY OF SILT AND BLACK CLAY BUT SOMETIMES SANDY WITH MINOR DISSEMINATED TIN. TIN BEARING GRAVELS LOCATED IN MODERN STREAMS, AND TERRACES; ALLUVIAL FLATS ARE NARROW; ONE POSSIBLE BEDROCK SOURCE OF TIN ARE SCATTERED AREAS OF QUARTZ VEINS WITH WOLFRAM, SCHEELITE, CASSITERITE, AND GOLD; IN A FEW CASES, THESE LODES WERE WORK FOR TUNGSTEN; BEDROCK IS GRANITE SINCE THE FIELD IS NEAR THE CENTER OF LARGE ELLIPTICAL GRANITE BATHOLITH WHICH MEASURES ABOUT 16 MI ON A EW AXIS AND 24 MI ON A NS AXIS; THE GRANITE IS LOCALLY PORPHYRITIC, SCATTERED QUARTZ VEINS ARE NOTED; THIS SO-CALLED KOETONG BATHOLITH IS LIKELY PART OF AN EXTENSIVE BATHOLITH WHICH INCLUDES THE CORRYONG GRANITE TO THE E AND GRANITES OF THE MT PLEASANT RANGE N OF MURRAY RIVER IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

  • THE FIRST PHASE OF PRODUCTION WAS FROM 1872 TO 1875 WHEN MOST OF THE IMPORTANT TIN GRAVELS WERE LOCATED; A SEVERE DROP IN TIN PRICES ESSENTIAL CLOSED THE FIELD IN 1875 WHICH CAUSED MINERS TO PROSPECT FOR GOLD; MINING BEGAN AGAIN IN 1880; SOME ORE WAS SMELTED LOCALLY AT TALLANGATTA; LODES WERE ACTIVITY EXPLOITED IN THE EARLY 1880'S INCLUDING THE WALWA, JINGELLIC AND MT. ALFRED TIN VEINS; AFTER 1885, TIN PRICES FELL AGAIN AND THE FIELD NEVER AGAIN WAS A LARGE TIN PRODUCER; MINING METHODS USED INCLUDED SAND PUMP, MONITOR AND GRAVITATIONAL SLUICING; DIFFICULTY IN SEPARATION OF ILMENITE FROM TIN CAUSED TIN PRODUCTION PROBLEMS AS DID THE LACK OF DEPENDABLE WATER SUPPLY; THE MINES DEPT NOTED THE FIELD WAS BEST SUITED FOR PRODUCTION BY SMALL PARTIES AND NOT BY COMPANIES.

Deposit MODELING NOTES: REPORTED TIN CONCENTRATES PRODUCED IN THE FIELD IS ABOUT 189 TONS; THIS IS ABOUT 120 MT OF TIN METAL; USING THE 1914 PRODUCTION DATA FROM THE BORDER CO. OF 15,007 CY WITH 4 TONS OF TIN CONCENTRATE, THE ESTIMATED TIN GRADE IS 0.22 KG PER CM. THIS GRADE AND THE TOTAL TIN PRODUCED SUGGESTS THAT THE TOTAL VOLUME WORKED IS 540,000 CM; REMAINING UNWORKED ALLUVIUM IS SMALL AND NO SIGNIFICANT RESERVES ARE LIKELY.
Deposit PRINCIPAL PLACER DEPOSITS ARE FOUND ALONG KOETONG CREEK WHERE DEPOSITS OCCUR IN NARROW ALLUVIAL FLATS; IN MODERN ALLUVIUM (NO THICKER THAN 10 FT), TIN GRAVELS WERE IN PATCHES ON BEDROCK WITH THICKNESS OF 3 FT OR LESS; PAYABLE WASH IN THE EXCELSOR OPERATION 1.5 TO 2.5 MI S OF KOETONG TOWNSHIP INCLUDED A PAY HORIZON OF ONE CHAIN IN WIDTH (66 OR 100 FT) IN TERRACE WITH 0-4.5 FT RED GRANITIC SOIL, 4.5-7 FT GRANITE DETRITUS, 7-8.25 FT GREY COLORED ORE GRAVEL WITH "TIN ORE ON FLOOR," AND AT 8.25 GRANITE BEDROCK; AT THE ANNANDALE SYNDICATE PROPERTY, THE PLIOCENE TERRACE DEPOSIT WAS NEAR A DRAINAGE DIVIDE; ABOUT 2 MI OF TIN GRAVEL WAS IN THE UPPER PART OF MOUNTAIN CREEK N OF SHELLEY TOWNSHIP; ABOUT 0.5 MI PLIOCENE HIGH TERRACES WITH TIN GRAVELS ALONG TRIBUTARY OF DRY FOREST CREEK; UPPER 0.5 MI OF TIN GRAVEL IN ROYAL PARK CREEK; TIN GRAVELS OCCURRED (ABOUT 1 CHAIN WIDE) ALONG A NARROW CHANNEL WITHIN AN ALLUVIAL PLAIN FOR A DISTANCE OF 0.5 MI ON LOWER KOETONG CREEK (7-8 MI NW KOETONG
