Deposit IRON AND MANGANESE DEPOSITS ARE LOCATED ON FAZENDA CASTANHAO ABOUT 26 KM, S45W FROM JEQUIE. THE IRON AND MANGANESE MINES IN THE AREA ARE INACTIVE AND THE CHIEF DEVELOPMENT IS AN OPEN CUT THAT MEASURES ABOUT 205 BY 20 METERS AND ABOUT 10 METERS DEEP. A FINE TO COARSELY-CRYSTALLINE QUARTZITE THAT CONTAINS DISSEMINATED AND LENSOID BODIES OF MAGNETITE HAS BEEN MINED. FINELY DISSEMINATED MAGNETITE IS MORE COMMON IN THE FINER GRAINED QUARTZITE, WHEREAS THE LENSOID BODIES ARE MORE COMMON IN COARSELY CRYSTALLINE QUARTZITE. THE TOTAL TONNAGE OF IRON ORE IS VERY SMALL AND IS NOT ECONOMICAL. THE NEARBY MANGANESE OXIDES ZONES (2) ARE ALSO NOT ECONOMICAL.
