Deposit THE MASINLOC MINES ARE LOCATED ALONG A NORTH-NORTHEASTERLY- TRENDING BELT 40 KM LONG OF GABBROIC ROCK. THE ROCKS ARE PART OF THE ZAMBALES ULTRAMAFIC COMPLEX, CLASSIFIED AS AN "ALPINE TYPE" COMPLEX. THE MINE IS LOCATED IN COTO, MASINLOC, ABOUT 150 KM N40W OF MINILA. 800TPD PRODUCTION-1967; IN 1973-484,609DMT AT 1360TPD LYING LENS ABOUT 600 METERS LONG, 300 METERS WIDE AND AS MUCH AS 80 M THICK. MAGNETIC AND GRAVITY SURVEYS COMBINED WITH GEOLOGIC STUDIES LED TO THE DISCOVERY IN 1964 AND 1965 OF FOUR "BLIND" ORE- BODIES AGGREGATING 3.25 MILLION TONS. MINES YIELD REFRACTORY TYPE CHROMITE ORE. BENGUET CONSOLIDATED HAS OPERATED THE MINES UNDER CONTRACT FROM CONSOLIDATED MINES INCORPORATED SINCE 1934. 1976- THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IS 1000. THE CAPACITY AND CRUDE ORE MINED IS 3800 TONS/DAY. THE UNDERGROUND MINE IS DEVELOPED BY ADIT AND VERTICAL SHAFT. THE SYSTEM OF UNDERGROUND MINING IS BY TIMBERED STOPES AND ROOM AND PILLAR. THE OPEN PIT OPERATIONS YIELD 3400 TONS ORE/DAY AND 17,000 TONS/DAY OF WASTE STRIPPED. OPEN PIT EQUIPMENT INCLUDES BLAST HOLE DRILLS, SHOVELS, BULLDOZERS AND TRUCKS. THE MILL CONCENTRATES 2000 TONS ORE/DAY BY THE GRAVITY METHOD AND 2000 METRIC TONS/DAY BY THE HEAVY MEDIA SEPARATION METHOD. BENGUET RECEIVES 25% OF THE NET PROCEEDS FROM SALES OF THE CHROMITE ORE. 1978 - DAILY ORE CAPACITY IS 3000 ROM TONS/DAY AT 34% CHROMITE (CR2O3). MILL EXTRACTION INCLUDES WASHING, HEAVY MEDIA SEPARATION AND GRAVITY CONCENTRATION. PRIOR TO 1975 CONSOLIDATED MINES INCORPORATED WAS THE ONLY REFRACTORY CHROMITE PRODUCER IN THE PHILIPPINES. 1964 - AN AERIAL TRAM WAS INSTALLED AND ORE STARTED TO BE TAKEN FROM THE GOVERNMENT ZAMBIA MINERAL RESERVATION. 1976 - CHROMITE ORE PRODUCTION SUFFERED A DECLINE IN VOLUME ALTHOUGH VALUES INCREASED BY ABOUT 50%. THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE SPECTACULAR RISE IN PRICE OF CHROMITE. PRODUCTION COST PER TON OF ORE WAS GREATLY INFLUENCED BY A 3-MONTH SUSPENSION OF SHIPMENTS DUE TO DAMAGE WROUGHT BY TYPHOON "DIDANG". THE COST PER TON IN 1976 WAS $21.80 COMPARED TO $13.28 IN 1975. 1953 - PRODUCTION BEGAN IN 1938. THE ORE PROPERTY LIES 24 KM EAST OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF MASINLOC, ZAMBALES PROVINCE. ORE IS CONFINED TO A HILL ABOUT 150 METERS HIGH AND 300 METERS IN DIAMETER. THE ORE RESERVES IN A SINGLE OREBODY NEAR THE SURFACE IS ESTIMATED AT 10 MILLION METRIC TONS. IT IS REFRACTORY AND SUITABLE FOR REFRACTORY FIRE- BRICK. BEFORE THE WAR, ORE RESERVES STOOD AT 9 MILLION METRIC TONS, BUT SUBSEQUENT DIAMOND DRILLING HAS REVEALED MORE TONNAGE. AT THE CURRENT RATE OF ANNUAL PRODUCTION WHICH IS 300,000 TONS, THE LIFE OF THE MINE IS ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN 30 YEARS. THIS IS THE LARGEST KNOWN REFRACT- ORY CHROMITE DEPOSIT IN THE WORLD. 1968 - 43 HOLES AMOUNTING TO 4880 METERS OF DIAMOND DRILLING AND 1690 METERS OF UNDERGROUND DEVELOPMENT HAVE BEEN DONE.
