| Deposit | BARITE OCCURS IN BLACK CLAY (UMBER) DERIVED FROM THE MOUNT ATHOS FORMATION. AT THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT THE SHAFTS PENETRATE A FEW FEET OF RED CLAY NEAR THE SURFACE AND THEN CONTINUE IN THE BLACK "UMBER". NO BEDROCK WAS NOTED IN THE WORKINGS, BUT ABOUT 15 M (50 FT) TO THE EAST ARE EXPOSURES OF QUARTZ MICA SCHIST STRIKING N 35 E AND DIPPING 70 NW. THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT IS THOUGHT TO BE THE CONTINUATION OF THE MINERALIZED ZONE IN THE PHILLIPS MINE WHICH LOCALLY HAS BEEN OFFSET BY FAULTING. THE SOUTHWESTERN END OF THE OPEN CUT AT THE PHILLIPS MINE ENDS ABRUPTLY AGAINST A QUARZITE WALL WHICH MARKS A FAULT CONTACT. THE QUARTZITE STRIKES N 35 E AND DIPS STEEPLY NORTHWEST AND THERE IS A SHARP CONTACT BETWEEN THE QUARTZITE AND THE BLACK CLAY. |
