Comments on the production information

  • CONSIDERABLE QUANTITIES OF BARITE WERE MINED AT THE PHILLIPS MINE. AT THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT ABOUT 4 CARS OF BARITE WERE PRODUCED IN 1931.

Workings at the site

  • Type of workings Surface/Underground
    Overall depth 18.3M

Comments on the workings information

  • MINE WORKED BY OPEN CUT MORE THAN 61 M (200 FT) LONG, 23 M (75 FT) WIDE, AND 12.2 M (40 FT) DEEP. THE PROSPECT WAS WORKED BY SHAFTS, THE DEEPEST BEING 18.3 M (60 FT), ONE OPEN CUT ABOUT 3.7 M (12 FT) DEEP, AND SEVERAL SHALLOW TRENCHES.

Comments on development

  • MINE WAS OPENED IN THE 1880'S BY AN OPEN CUT. THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT WAS WORKED ON A SMALL SCALE DURING THE WINTER OF 1930-1931 AND CONSISTED OF SEVERAL SHAFTS WITH A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF 18.3 M (60 FT), ONE OPEN CUT ABOUT 3.7 M (12 FT) DEEP, AND SEVERAL SHALLOW TRENCHES. ABOUT FOUR CARLOADS OF BARITE WERE SHIPPED FROM THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT IN 1931, BUT THE BARITE IS REPORTED TO HAVE CONTAINED A RELATIVELY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF IRON. THE PHILLIPS MINE IS REPORTED TO HAVE PRODUCED CONSIDERABLE QUANTITIES OF BARITE.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit Discovery Year: 1880'S
Deposit BARITE OCCURS IN BLACK CLAY (UMBER) DERIVED FROM THE MOUNT ATHOS FORMATION. AT THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT THE SHAFTS PENETRATE A FEW FEET OF RED CLAY NEAR THE SURFACE AND THEN CONTINUE IN THE BLACK "UMBER". NO BEDROCK WAS NOTED IN THE WORKINGS, BUT ABOUT 15 M (50 FT) TO THE EAST ARE EXPOSURES OF QUARTZ MICA SCHIST STRIKING N 35 E AND DIPPING 70 NW. THE PHILLIPS PROSPECT IS THOUGHT TO BE THE CONTINUATION OF THE MINERALIZED ZONE IN THE PHILLIPS MINE WHICH LOCALLY HAS BEEN OFFSET BY FAULTING. THE SOUTHWESTERN END OF THE OPEN CUT AT THE PHILLIPS MINE ENDS ABRUPTLY AGAINST A QUARZITE WALL WHICH MARKS A FAULT CONTACT. THE QUARTZITE STRIKES N 35 E AND DIPS STEEPLY NORTHWEST AND THERE IS A SHARP CONTACT BETWEEN THE QUARTZITE AND THE BLACK CLAY.
