  • CAPACITY EXPRESSED IN AL METAL. ALBA IS RUNNING AT ITS FULL RATED CAPACITY OF 444,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR AND WILL DO SO ALL NEXT YEAR. THIS INCREASE IN CAPACITY FROM 225,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR UP TO 444,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR IS DUE TO A NEW SMELTING LINE BEING ADDED.

Deposit ALBA PLANNED TO EXPAND CAPACITY OF THE SMELTER BY DOUBLING EXISTING CAPACITY TO 465000 MTPY. THE EXPANSION IS OCCURRING IN TWO PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW POTLINE, THE SECOND PHASE IS THE MODERNIZATION OF THE POTLINES. ESTIMATED COST OF THE EXPANSION IS $US1400 MILLION THE FIRST STAGE WAS COMPLETED IN 1992 AND THE SECOND STAGE IS DUE TO BE COMPLETED IN 1994. A NEW POWER STATION TO FEED THE NEW POTLINE IS OPERATIONAL. THE TOTAL AVAILABLE POWER IS NOW 1340 MW. ALBA SIGNED AN AGREEMENT IN 1991 FOR A $110 MILLION LOAN TO MODERNIZE THE SMELTER. THIS COST IS IN ADDITION TO THE COST TO EXPAND THE SMELTER. THE LOAN IS TO BE REPAID IN 4 1/2 YR INSTALLMENTS OF $10 M. THE REMAINDER IS TO BE REPAID AFTER 5 YR. INTEREST RATE IS 0.6 % OVER THE LONDON INTERBANK OFFERED RATE. 3 YR GRACE PER. A $70 MILLION LOAN WAS APPROVED IN 1992 TO LINK NEW POWER PLANT TO LOCAL POWER GRID. HYDRO ALUMINUM TECHNOLOGY USED TO RETROFIT LINES 1-3. PECHINEY TECHNOLOGY USED FOR NEW LINE 4.
