| Deposit | ALBA PLANNED TO EXPAND CAPACITY OF THE SMELTER BY DOUBLING EXISTING CAPACITY TO 465000 MTPY. THE EXPANSION IS OCCURRING IN TWO PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW POTLINE, THE SECOND PHASE IS THE MODERNIZATION OF THE POTLINES. ESTIMATED COST OF THE EXPANSION IS $US1400 MILLION THE FIRST STAGE WAS COMPLETED IN 1992 AND THE SECOND STAGE IS DUE TO BE COMPLETED IN 1994. A NEW POWER STATION TO FEED THE NEW POTLINE IS OPERATIONAL. THE TOTAL AVAILABLE POWER IS NOW 1340 MW. ALBA SIGNED AN AGREEMENT IN 1991 FOR A $110 MILLION LOAN TO MODERNIZE THE SMELTER. THIS COST IS IN ADDITION TO THE COST TO EXPAND THE SMELTER. THE LOAN IS TO BE REPAID IN 4 1/2 YR INSTALLMENTS OF $10 M. THE REMAINDER IS TO BE REPAID AFTER 5 YR. INTEREST RATE IS 0.6 % OVER THE LONDON INTERBANK OFFERED RATE. 3 YR GRACE PER. A $70 MILLION LOAN WAS APPROVED IN 1992 TO LINK NEW POWER PLANT TO LOCAL POWER GRID. HYDRO ALUMINUM TECHNOLOGY USED TO RETROFIT LINES 1-3. PECHINEY TECHNOLOGY USED FOR NEW LINE 4. |
