Analytical data

Result A SINGLE SAMPLE OF TURBID LAKE WATER COLLECTED IN AUGUST, 1990 RAN 500 PPM B, 200 PPM LI, 20 PPM SR, 1110 PPM K, 2780 PPM NA, 526 PPM CA, 120 PPB TI, AND 130 PPB MO. BRINE CHEMISTRY INDICATES THAT THIS LAKE HAS A NA-CL-(SO4) BRINE (NA AND CL ARE GREATER THAN 25 MOLE PERCENT AND SO4 IS 5 TO 25 MOLE PERCENT). SEE RISACHER AND FRITZ (1991) FOR INFLOW WATER ANALYSES
Result THEY ALSO REPORT LAKE SURFACE WATER CHEMISTRY WHERE TEMP = 8.8 DEG C, PH = 8.3, AND DENSITY = 1.052 G/CUBIC CM.

Economic information

Comments on the geologic information

  • DURING FIELDWORK IN AUGUST, 1990, THE LAKE ELEVATION WHEN MEASURED BY AN ALTIMETER UNCORRECTED FOR BAROMETRIC PRESSURE WAS 4445 M; A LOW TERRACE OF SAND WAS MEASURED AT 4446 M; A SECOND TERRACE OF SAND AND IGNIMBRITE REGISTERED AT 4450 M; THE THIRD TERRACE OF IGNIMBRITE-CEMENTED GRAVEL WAS AT 4482 M, AND A POSSIBLE FOURTH TERRACE REGISTERED AT 4485 M. CALCIUM CARBONATE CEMENT COATS GRAVEL SURFACE BETWEEN THE SECOND AND THIRD TERRACES; NONE WAS PRESENT ABOVE THE FOURTH TERRACE.

Deposit LAGUNA BUSCH O KALINA HAS NO EVAPORITE PRECIPITATE AROUND OR ON THE EASTERN EXTREMES OF THE LAKE. RISACHER AND FRITZ CLASSIFY THIS SITE AS A LAKE WITH A MEAN DEPTH OF 0.6 M. THE WATER SAMPLE COLLECTED BY THE USGS WAS COLLECTED FROM THE EAST SIDE OF THE LAKE ON A WINDY DAY AND THE WATER WAS TURBID, YELLOW, OPAQUE, AND WHITE-CAPPED. THE SAMPLE MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED BY SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES OF LAKE-BOTTOM SEDIMENTS. A SAMPLE OF INFLOW WATER FROM CERRO COJINO AT THE EAST END OF THE LAKE WAS ACID (PH = 4.5) AND HAD A VERY LOW TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS CONTENT. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER INLETS INTO THIS BASIN AND FOUR OLDER LAKE TERRACES CAN BE IDENTIFIED ON BASINAL SLOPES ABOVE THE LAGUNA. EXTENSIVE SALAR AREAS SHOW ON THE MAPS JUST TO THE SOUTHWEST OF LAGUNA BUSCH O KALINA; SMALLER SALAR AREAS RIM THE NORTHERNMOST SHORE.
