  • GEOL.DESC: BELT OF PYROXENE SYENITE GNEISS, 12 MI. LONG, CONTAINS LENSES OF FELDSPATHIC ULTRAMAFIC GNEISS CONTAINING ILMENITE AND MAGNETITE GRAINS. METAMORPHISM HAS RECRYSTALLIZED THE ROCK, SO ILMENITE AND MAGNETITE ARE IN DISCRETE GRAINS LARGELY FREE OF INTERGROWTHS OF THE OTHER MINERALS.

ALTHOUGH THE ROCK IS LOW GRADE (ABOUT 20% FE AND 7% TIO2) IT CONCENTRATES WELL (MAGNETIC, ABOUT 65% FE AND 4% TIO2; AND NONMAG., ABOUT 30% FE AND 48% TIO2, SEE TABLES, P. 231, LEONARD AND BUDDINGTON, 1964). V IS LOW: LESS THAN 0.05% V2O5 IN ROCK, 0.15% IN MAG. CONC.
