Comments on the location information

  • 1 1/2 MI NW NORTHERN CROSS
  • Original political location is Deer Lodge county. However, original lat/long place it 500 meters inside adjacent Granite county. Original coordinates were: lat/long NAD27 46-13-46N 113-15-23W (46.22944 -113.25639); UTM N<blank> E<blank> Z<blank>; PLSS line# 1: Meridian- Montana Principal, TWNSHP 006N, RNG 013W, Sect 32, Sect_fract <blank>. The location description 1 1/2 MI NW NORTHERN CROSS is aprocryphal because the Northern Cross mine is located 8 miles to the NE in Granite county. The reporter probably intended to say 1.5 mi NW of the Southern Cross mine. The original location is consistent with this description. The geonames location for Bob Evans Mine is 2 km ESE of the original location, safely inside Deer Lodge county. This location is based on a 1993 Montana Dept Transportation railroad map, whereas the original location is based on a 1935 MBM Memoir reference. The BuMines duplicate record 10245959 is located very close to the original location and is based on a 1933 MBM reference. In both records, the PLSS coordinates match the original lat/long fairly closely. Since the original coordinates contradicted the county name in both records, they were changed to the geonames location and the PLSS coordinates were cleared.
