SIDE OF CEDAR KNOLL. MALACHITE IS IN CEDAR SPRINGS DOL., 4 TO 6 IN. THICK, ABOUT 50 TO 60 FT BELOW TOP OF KNOLL, AT BASE OF BLAINE FM. SUPPOSEDLY, SMALL COPPER SHEETS WERE FOUND IN THIS AREA AND CRUMPLED INTO COPPER NUGGETS BY PEOPLE GOING ON PICNICS TO CEDAR KNOLL FROM WINNVIEW AREA. WINNVIEW POST OFFICE WAS IN SW-SW-SE-33-17N-10W, ABOUT 2.5 MI E. AND 1 MI N. OF CEDAR KNOLL, ESTABLISHED JUNE 23, 1892, AND DISCONTINUED APRIL 29, 1905, WITH JOSEPH B. WINN AS FIRST POSTMASTER. HIS SON WAS LIVING IN SAME HOUSE IN 1972, AND HE RELATED THE STORY OF WHERE THE COPPER WAS FOUND. I DID NOT FIND NATIVE COPPER, BUT THERE IS A REGIONAL OCCURRENCE OF COPPER IN THE CEDAR SPRINGS DOL., AT THE BASE OF THE BLAINE FM., EXTENDING FOR MANY MILES. |
