Comments on the location information

  • THE LOST LEAD AND OTHERS ARE NOT IN THE REFUGE, BUT TO THE N. OF THE FENCE. MERRITT, HAM, AND ANDERSON (1941, SHEET 423) SAID THAT THIS WAS A GRANITE DIKE IN GABBRO, WITH GALENA, SPHALERITE, MAGNETITE, AND HEMATITE. THIS MIGHT BE THE PROSPECT REFERRED TO BY WOODRUFF (1904, P. 26) THAT HAD COPPER AT 10 FT DEEP. VEEDER (1936, SHEET 843) LOCATED 4 PROSPECTS IN THE S2 OF SEC 4, ONE OF WHICH WAS THE ONE LISTED BY MERRITT, ETC., BUT IT WAS ABOUT 200 FT FARTHER SW, IN THE NE-SW-SW-NW-SE-4. OTHERS LISTED BY VEEDER (1936, SHEET 843) WERE IN THE SE-NW-NW-SE-SW-4; THE C-2W-E2-NE-SE-SW-4, AND THE C-S2-S2-NE-NW-SE-4, ALL ABOUT 25 FT DEEP, AND WORKED AROUND 1901-1906, ON AN 8-FT GREENSTONE DIKE, NEAR GRANITE-GABBRO CONTACT. TAFF (1904, P. 62) MENTIONED THAT A 40-FT GRANITIC-APLITE DIKE CUTTING GABBRO OCCURRED IN THE SE OF 4-4N-13W, BUT HE MUST HAVE MEANT T3N (THERE ARE NO IGNEOUS ROCKS IN 4-4N-13W. WILSON (1976, P. 149, 151-153, 160) DISCUSSES THE HISTORY OF THE AREA AND HAS PICTURES OF THE
  • LOST LEAD MINE AND DR. HARDIN'S SMELTER NEXT TO THE SHAFT, NW OF MOUNT WALL. WILSON (1960, P. 13) MENTIONED THAT IN THE FT. SMITH HERALD (AUG. 8, 1849) IS A STORY ON A CHOCTAW, MAJOR THOMAS WALL, WHO ORGANIZED A GOLD EXPEDITION TO THE WICHITAS. POSSIBLY OLDER PROSPECTS EXIST.

Owner Dr. S. J. Hardin, Shawnee Mining Co.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THIS AREA COULD HAVE BEEN A SOURCE OF METALS FOR THE NEARBY RED BEDS.

Workings at the site

  • Type of workings Surface
    Name of workings UNKNOWN
    Area 0.405HA
    Overall depth 7.92M

Comments on the workings information

  • THE LOST LEAD WAS 72 FT DEEP IN 1903 AND 108 FT IN 1904; IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE DEEPEST MINE IN THE AREA. THE OTHER MINES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT 25 FT DEEP OR LESS. THERE WAS ALMOST NO ACTIVITY BY OCTOBER 1904. MUCH OF THE AREA WAS IN LITIGATION. DR. HARDIN SPENT ABOUT $19,500 ON A SMELTER AND HOISTING EQUIPMENT. HE HAD AN ASSAY OFFICE IN MEERS.

Comments on development

  • MAJOR THOMAS WALL, A CHOCTAW, MAY HAVE PROSPECTED THE AREA AS EARLY AS AUGUST 1849, AFTER THIS REGION WAS GIVEN TO THE CHOCTAW NATION IN THE 1820'S. SEE WILSON (1960, P. 13).

Subject category Comment text
Deposit WILSON (1980, P. 13) SAID THAT DR. S.J. HARDIN HAD 13 MINES. BAIN (1904, P. 85-86) NAMED 6 MINES. WOODRUFF (1904, P. 26) MENTIONED THAT ONE PROSPECT 26 FT DEEP HAD 20 LBS OF COPPER (PER TON OF ORE?) AT 10 FT DEEP, NEAR THE LOST LEAD PROSPECT. THE PROSPECTS WERE IDLE IN 1904, BUT DR. HARDIN INTENDED TO DEEPEN THE COPPER PROSPECT TO 200 FT. VEEDER (1936, SHEET 846) LOCATED THE LOST LEAD IN THE SE-NW-NW-SE-NW-4-3N-13W. MERRITT, HAM, AND ANDERSON (1941) LOCATED A SHAFT WITH MINERALS NEARBY, WHICH IS USED HEREIN AS PROBABLE COPPER PROSPECT.
Deposit AN APLITE DIKE, ABOUT 8 FT THICK, STRIKING ENE, IN GABBRO, PROBABLY HAS CHALCOPYRITE, ALONG WITH GALENA, SPHALERITE, MAGNETITE, AND HEMATITE.
