Comments on the location information

  • 400 FT W. OF ROAD, AND 750 FT S. OF BARN, AND 200 FT E. OF CREEK, IS 10 FT BY 10 FT WIDE SHAFT, 125 FT DEEP. HAWORTH AND BENNETT (1900) SAID THAT THIN NATIVE COPPER SHEETS WERE FOUND IN A 6-INCH SEAM OF CLAY, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SHAFT AT 32 FT. THE THIN SHEETS WERE 0.5-2 INCHES LONG AND WIDE. THIS WOULD BE AT THE BASE OF THE BISON FORMATION, OR IN TOP OF SALT PLAINS FORMATION. REITER (1921) SAID THAT THE SHAFT HAD BEEN DEEPENED, AND THAT MORE NATIVE COPPER WAS ENCOUNTERED AT 70 FT. IN 1940, MERRITT VISITED THE SITE, AND THE OWNER, MR. W.W. THOMAS, HAD SUNK A SHAFT 28 FT DEEP, ABOUT 330 FT TO THE NW, AND FOUND THIN NATIVE COPPER SHEETS IN AN 8-INCH SHALE LAYER AT THE BOTTOM. NATIVE COPPER IS ALSO REPORTED FROM WELLS NEAR HILLSDALE, BUT SOME TEST HOLES NEAR THE BARNES PROSPECT SHOWED NO COPPER.
