  • TWO SMALL PITS LESS THAN 5 FT DEEP WERE DUG ALONG A FISSURE OR DIKE STRIKING WNW, APPARENTLY FOLLOWING THE CREEK AT THE HEAD OF DEVILS CANYON. DEVILS CANYON IS ORIENTED SW-NE, BUT THE CREEK TURNS ABRUPTLY WNW ON THE NE END OF THE CANYON, AND THE CREEK THEN STRIKES WNW. THE PITS HAD AZURITE AND MALACHITE IN THEM. THE DIKE COULD BE TRACED TOWARD THE TOP OF FLAT TOP MTN., WHERE IT INTERSECTED ANOTHER VEIN STRIKING WSW INTO ANOTHER PROSPECT PIT WITH COPPER MINERALS IN THE NW OF NE OF NW OF SEC. 2-4N-20W. THIS LATTER PIT WAS DUG IN 1896. SEE RYAN AND WINNETT (1936, SHEET 2002), RYAN (1936, SHEET KR-24), AND RYAN AND VEEDER (1936, SHEET 3).

  • POLK (1948) AND MERRITT (1958) DISCUSS GEOLOGY. AFTER EMPLACEMENT OF REFORMATORY GRANITE, THE LUGERT GRANITE WAS INTRUDED, FOLLOWED BY DIABASE DIKES WITH COPPER SOLUTIONS. THE COPPER MINERALS WERE OXIDIZED TO AZURITE AND MALACHITE. THIS DEPOSIT COULD HAVE FURNISHED COPPER TO THE FLOWERPOT-DUNCAN-SAN ANGELO SEAS DURING PERMIAN TIME.

  • RYAN AND WINNETT (1936) SAID THAT THERE WERE 2 PITS, EACH 5 FT DEEP, ON VEIN THAT TRENDED ESE TO WNW. THE VEIN INTERSECTED ANOTHER TOWARD THE WNW, UP THE MOUNTAIN. THE OTHER VEIN TRENDED WSW TO ANOTHER PIT IN THE NW-NE-NW-2-4N-20W. THE LATTER PIT WAS DUG IN 1896, WITH AZURITE AND MALACHITE, BY BILL KENNEDY OF LUGERT.

Comments on development

  • RYAN (1936, SHEET KR-24) SAID THAT HE AND WINNETT SANK THE TWO HOLES IN JUNE 1936. AZURITE AND MALACHITE OCCURRED WITH A DIABASE DIKE IN WEATHERED GRANITE. RYAN THOUGHT THAT THIS COULD BE COMMERCIAL. THE DIKE IS ABOUT 20 FT WIDE, WITH GRANITE WALL ROCK ON EITHER SIDE.
