  • HALE (1981B, P. 304, 310, 312, 318, LOCALITY 32) AND WILSON (1976, P. 110-127) MENTION THE MEXICAN MINE. IT PROBABLY WAS A DIKE THAT WAS MINED OUT AND LATER USED AS A VERTICAL CHIMNEY OR SMELTER. COPPER (METALLIC) ARTIFACTS WERE FOUND IN THE CANYON AREA. THE GEOLOGY IS SHOWN BY POLK (1948) AND MERRITT (1958). SIBLEY (1805), MALEY (1811-1813), COCKRELL (1892), CUMMINS (1892), AND SETTLES (1892) DESCRIBED MINING AND A SPANISH VILLAGE IN THIS AREA. THE SPANISH CAME FROM THE SANTA FE AREA, INTERMITTENTLY, ACCORDING TO MOST OF THE AUTHORS, PROBABLY BEFORE 1765 AND CONTINUING TO 1833. IN 1908, A. HYMER SANK A 32 FT SHAFT ON ALBERT HOPKINS LAND, JUST S. OF DEVILS CANYON, NEAR THE LEE WINTERS PLACE, ACCORDING TO HALE (1981B, P. 312, 318, LOC. 8) WHO QUOTED RYAN (1936, SHEET KR-35). HALE LISTED LOC. 8 AS A COPPER SHAFT IN THIS AREA.

  • PROBABLY A VEIN WITH COPPER MINERALS WAS WORKED OUT AND THEN USED AS A CHIMNEY FOR A SMELTER. MANY COPPER ARTIFACTS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE AREA. THE WINTERS FAMILY LIVED IN THE AREA SINCE THE 1880'S AND NOW HAVE THE ARTIFACTS IN ALTUS, OKLAHOMA.

  • WORKED INTERMITTENTLY SINCE 1765 OR BEFORE. MRS. WINTERS WAS LIVING ON THE PROPERTY SE OF THE MINE IN 1936. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, LEE WINTER, HOMESTEADED HERE IN 1901. BEFORE THAT, AROUND 1880'S, THEY LIVED S. OF THE RIVER, IN TEXAS. IN 1896, GREER CO. BECAME PART OF OKLAHOMA.

Deposit 7 FT DIABASE DIKE IN HOPKINS SHAFT NO. 2. DIABASE DIKES CUT THE REFORMATORY GRANITE.
Deposit VERTICAL CHIMNEY IN GRANITE, WITH WOOD ASHES AND ARTIFACTS, IS ALL THAT REMAINS OF THE MEXICAN MINE. THE HOPKINS SHAFT NO. 2 WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN DUG NEARBY.
Deposit HALE (1981B, P. 304, 310, 312, 318, LOC. 32) AND WILSON (1976, P. 110-127) MENTION THAT THE MEXICAN MINE WAS PROBABLY OPENED BEFORE 1765. IT IS ON THE OLD LEE WINTERS PLACE, ABOUT 200 YARDS NW OF THE WINTERS HOUSE. IT WAS PROBABLY A SMELTER, IN A FISSURE IN THE GRANITE, CONTAINING 6-7 FT OF WOOD ASHES. THE HOPKINS SHAFT WAS FARTHER WEST. RYAN AND WINNETT (1936, SHEET 2004) HAVE A HOPKINS SHAFT IN THE SW-SW-SE-NW-NE-12, WITH SAME DESCRIPTION, DUG IN 1903. THIS WAS PROBABLY IN N2-NE-NE-SW-NE-12 (SEE 40075 22).
