Comments on the location information

  • BLOCK A, TEXAS AND NEW ORLEANS RAILROAD CO. SURVEY. MCCLELLAN (1877) LOCATED HIS MAIN OPERATIONS IN SECS. 37-38. STROUD AND OTHERS (1970, P. 37) LOCATED THE MINE IN SEC. 37. BEEDE AND CHRISTNER (1926, P. 38-41, FIG. 5, MAP) LOCATED THE MINE IN SEC. 35 (JUST W. OF 37) ON THE S. SIDE OF CEDAR CREEK. A SMALL TOWN OF 150 PEOPLE LIVED HERE IN THE 1877-1887 PERIOD, AND 12 BUILDINGS WERE ERECTED ALONG WITH A SMELTER AND MILL. IT IS ON JOHNSON-EKERN RANCH. SMITH (1974, P. 63, PL. I) LOCATED THE INE IN THE C. OF WL OF SEC. 2, BLK. 44, H AND TC RR CO. SURVEY, MORE THAN A MILE E. OF THE C. OF SEC. 37. I DO NOT KNOW WHERE STROUD AND OTHERS (1970, P. 37-38) COLLECTED SAMPLE 28 (USBM, SAMPLE NO. RAF-8) OF SANDSTONE AND SHALE, AVERAGING 1.40% CU, EXCEPT THAT IT WAS MINE-RUN ORE IN SEC. 37. THE MILL WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1877, AND WORK PROCEEDED TO 1887, AND AGAIN IN 1917, 1943-1945, AND 1967-1970, WHEN EXPLORATION WAS STILL GOING ON. HORNADAY (1932), EWING (1954), PHILLIPS (1917), AND HALE
  • (1977) GIVE MUCH INFORMATION ON HISTORY. THE ORE BED IS SANDSTONE AND SHALE, AND POCKETS CAN BE 2 FT TO 11 FT THICK, ACCORDING TO SMITH (1974, P. 39) WHO QUOTED PHILLIPS (1917). ABOUT 250 TONS OF ORE WAS MINED. MCCLELLAN DIED IN OCT. 1885. HIS GRAND BELT COPPER CO. WAS CAPITALIZED AT $12,000,000.
